This week, members of Copper Canyon Fire & Medical and Verde Valley Fire District are training together on Swift Water Operations.

These hands-on trainings are essential for ensuring our crews are ready to respond safely and effectively to water-related emergencies, especially during monsoon season when heavy rainfall can quickly turn normally calm waterways, washes, and roadways into dangerous, fast-moving water.

A few important monsoon safety reminders:
• Never attempt to drive or walk through a flooded roadway.
• Turn around, don’t drown — even a small amount of moving water can be powerful enough to sweep away a vehicle or person.
• Avoid washes, low-water crossings, and areas experiencing flooding.
• If you encounter rising or moving water, move to higher ground and call 911 if you need assistance.

Our crews train year-round so they can be ready when our community needs them most.

Extreme Heat Warning

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for the Verde Valley and other areas of Yavapai County below 4,000 feet from 10 AM Wednesday through 8 PM Friday.

Dangerously hot temperatures between 105° and 110° are expected. Prolonged outdoor exposure can quickly lead to heat-related illness.

Drink plenty of water, stay in air-conditioned spaces, when possible, limit time outdoors, and avoid the hottest part of the day. Check on family, friends, neighbors, and those most vulnerable to extreme heat.

Never leave children or pets in an unattended vehicle. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If someone is overcome by the heat, move them to a cool, shaded area. Heat stroke is an emergency—call 911 immediately.

We are proud to have been part of this academy and to share our knowledge, experience, and resources with the newest members of the fire service. Training alongside other departments is a great opportunity to learn from one another and strengthen the fire service as a whole.
A special thank you to Copper Canyon Fire & Medical for allowing us to be part of this important training. Great job to all of the new hires, and we wish you the very best as you take this next step in your careers.

Over the weekend, Verde Valley Fire District stopped by the Mingus Union High School Volleyball team’s fundraiser car wash, where the team helped give one of our engines a good wash!
It was great to see the community come together to support the team and help them prepare for the upcoming season.
We wish the Mingus Marauders Volleyball team a fun, successful, and safe season. Good luck, girls!

Be like Bob—Turn Around, Don’t Drown!

Never attempt to drive through a flooded roadway. Just 12 inches of moving water can sweep a vehicle away. Water depth can change quickly, and you may not be able to see washed-out pavement, debris, or other hazards beneath the surface.

Barricades are there for a reason, never drive around them. When you encounter water over the road, choose safety, turn around, and find another route.

Your destination can wait. Your safety can’t.
