Imagine this if you will…..

You or your family member could be having a severe medical issue. Imagine someone in your home has had a traumatic injury. Imagine your newborn baby stops breathing and you call 911. A dispatcher takes your call and dispatches the closest ambulance, fire truck, police or all three depending on what the nature of your emergency is. Seconds seem like minutes and minutes seem like hours while you are waiting for responders to show up. In a true emergency time is of the essence. The emergency you experience becomes chaotic as you are waiting for responders. You hear the siren. The responders have your address. They are more than likely following gps to your location. Time matters and seconds count….. now ask yourself this…. How important is it that you have your address posted on your mailbox or on your home? When seconds count, failure to display your address causes a delay in the response to render aid to your emergency….. something that simple could actually save your life or the life of a loved one…. Many homes in our response area do not have the address displayed and cause a delay in us identifying the correct residence. Please be mindful and check to see if your home displays numbers that are visible. We hope that you never need us but if you do we want to be able to assist the best of our ability. 🚑 Ever wonder why an ambulance might load a patient, close the doors… and then just sit there?

Chances are, we’re not just sitting there.

Once a patient is inside the ambulance, the crew has an entire mobile emergency room at their fingertips—cardiac monitors, medications, IV supplies, airway equipment, and much more.

Sometimes, before we ever put the ambulance in drive, we need a few minutes to:

🩺 Assess the patient
❤️ Check vital signs or run an EKG
💉 Start an IV or give medications
🫁 Manage breathing or other immediate concerns
🏥 Determine the best hospital for that patient

That last one is important.

Not every hospital provides the same level of care for every emergency. A stroke, major trauma, or cardiac emergency may require a specific destination—and what we find during our assessment can completely change where we go.

Could we do some of this while driving?Absolutely.

But some things are a whole lot easier—and safer—when we aren't bouncing down the road. 😂

So, the next time you see an ambulance sitting in front of a house after the patient has been loaded, remember:

We’re not wasting time. We’re using it. 🚑💙

The crew may already be assessing, treating, and making critical decisions before the wheels ever start moving.

Our thoughts and prayers are with our neighboring Ashford Rescue and their families as they mourn the loss of their loved one. ❤️

Last night Cottonwood Rescue was dispatched along with other agencies to an overturned vehicle. Cottonwood Rescue was returning from the hospital from a previous 911 call and responded to this incident. The driver was very fortunate and walked away from what could have been much worse. Everyone who responded did a great job, thanks to all of you. The past few days have been a very busy time in the Ems world throughout the area. We at Cottonwood Rescue would like to remind everyone to be safe out there.

Shortly after 7:00 this morning Cottonwood Rescue was dispatched to an unresponsive infant. Upon arrival to the scene the crew was met in the yard with the child unresponsive but breathing. This became a load and go situation and Cottonwood Rescue 4 immediately left the scene emergency enroute to the hospital. Even though there was ALS personnel on board with Cottonwood, Dothan Fire was requested for mutual aid for additional assistance. Thank you for the additional help to Dfd Engine 4 crew. Also thank you to the county and city dispatchers that directed the appropriate resources that were needed. A big thank you to EMS 1 and Houston County Sheriff Department that provided an emergency es**rt for Rescue 4 to the proper emergency room . Last but certainly not least is a thank you to the entire emergency room staff that took over patient care. This morning was a reminder that it takes teamwork when critical calls are on the line. Our thoughts and prayers are with the patient and family as ongoing treatments are underway.
