About 80 percent of the land in the Verde Valley is National Forest. Dead Horse Ranch State Park and the Verde River Greenway are

within the city limits. Recreational opportunities abound for all. Active community members and visitors enjoy bicycling, hang gliding, hiking, river rafting and equestrian activities. Wildlife and bird watching opportunities are plentiful. The panoramic beauty of Cottonwood and the Verde Valley is unsurpassed. Cottonwood is the commercial hub of the Verde Valley. It is home to an industrious population of 12,000 residents who are part of a larger population of 40,000 people in the upper Verde Valley. The city encourages a positive business climate. The expanding Cottonwood Airpark and Cottonwood Municipal Airport provide excellent opportunities for businesses, pilots and residents. Pilots flying in and out of Cottonwood Municipal Airport can now review updated guides for both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. The guides include recommended noise abatement practices and standard operating procedures to help promote safe, courteous, and consistent flight operations.

The City of Cottonwood administrative offices will be closed on Monday, September 7, 2026 in observance of Labor Day.

The Cottonwood Public Library will be closed on September 7, and will reopen on September 8 at 9 a.m.

The Cottonwood Municipal Court will be closed on September 7, and will reopen on September 8 at 8 a.m.

The Cottonwood Recreation Center will remain open on September 7 and will operate according to the following schedule:
• Fitness Center: 4:30 a.m. – 8 p.m.
• Indoor Pool: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
• Outdoor Pool: 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. (lap swim) and 12-4 p.m. (open swim)
• Group Exercise Classes: Canceled

Cottonwood Area Transit (CAT) will not offer regular bus service on September 7, 2026. The Verde Shuttle will operate as usual on all routes on September 7. The CAT administrative offices will be closed on September 7 and will reopen on Tuesday, September 8 at 8 a.m.

Public Safety will be working regular hours and emergency utility personnel will be on-call and available. Call (928) 634-0186 to contact emergency utility personnel after business hours, on weekends, and holidays.

The City of Cottonwood was represented at the 2026 AZ Cities Annual Conference, with Council and staff participating in conversations on the issues shaping communities across Arizona.

Mayor Ann Shaw also participated as a panelist in the session “Boomtown: Managing Growth in Rural Arizona Without Losing Your Community,” discussing approaches to growth, infrastructure, and long-term community planning.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to connect with communities across Arizona and bring those conversations and new knowledge back to the City of Cottonwood.

The Cottonwood Historic Preservation Commission will hold a meeting on Wednesday, August, 26 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at the Council Chambers - Riverfront, 1083 E. Riverfront Road, Cottonwood, AZ 86326.

The following items are scheduled:

• Review and discuss the Historic Preservation Commission’s initiatives and priorities, and direct staff accordingly.
• Consider an amendment to the Historic Preservation Commission meeting calendar for November and December 2026.
• Discuss the removal of a building canopy on a contributing property within the Cottonwood Commercial Historic District, located at 1023 N Main Street (APN: 406-34-003).
• Discuss a project proposal for the Federal FY 2026 Arizona SHPO CLG Historic Preservation Fund Pass-Through Application, and direct staff accordingly.

The Cottonwood Public Library is pleased to host a traveling exhibit from the Arizona State Library as part of Arizona's Road to 250 initiative.

The exhibit features six display panels highlighting the people, places, and pivotal moments that have shaped Arizona's rich history and heritage.

The exhibit will be on display in the library's audiovisual room from Tuesday, August 25, through Saturday, September 12, and may be viewed during regular library hours: 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays. The library is closed on Sundays.

The Cottonwood Public Library is located at 100 S. 6th St., Cottonwood. Community members of all ages are invited to visit and explore this engaging look at Arizona's story.

• Review and discussion of Resolution Number 3408, the City of Cottonwood Affordable Housing Plan.

• Public Hearing and Consideration of CUP-26-006 for a Conditional Use Permit to Allow Multiple-Family Residences in the C-2 (Heavy Commercial) Zoning District, at 925, 926, and 960 Cove Parkway (APNs: 406-55-057, 004, and -003).

• Receive the annual General Plan Report for the period of January 2025 through June 2026.

• Presentation and discussion on the land use application process pursuant to the City’s Zoning Ordinance.
