🚒 Fire Marshal's Fire Safety Tip 🚒

Howdy! This is Timothy Andre, your local Fire Marshal with La Salle County Fire Rescue.

Today I'd like to share a fire safety tip that many homeowners may not have considered: residential fire sprinkler systems.

When people think about protecting their homes from fire, they often think of smoke alarms—and they should. Smoke alarms are a critical part of every home's fire safety plan. However, one of the most effective fire protection features available is a residential fire sprinkler system.

Home fire sprinklers can control or extinguish a fire in its early stages, often before the fire department arrives. They work alongside smoke alarms to provide valuable time for occupants to escape and can significantly reduce fire damage.

A common myth is that all sprinkler heads activate at once. In reality, only the sprinkler closest to the fire will typically activate.

If you're planning to build a new home or undertake major renovations, consider asking your builder about residential fire sprinklers. It's an investment in life safety that can make a critical difference when seconds count. A sprinkler costs about $1.35 per square foot in a new home. This cost is about the same as upgraded cabinets or carpet and can be done during renovations or new construction.

Stay safe, and as always, if you have questions about fire safety, we're here to help.

🚒 Fire Marshal's Fire Safety Tip 🚒

Howdy! This is Timothy Andre, your local Fire Marshal with La Salle County Fire Rescue.

Today's tip is simple, but it saves lives: make sure your smoke alarms are working.

Smoke alarms provide the early warning needed to escape a fire before conditions become deadly. In many cases, residents have less than two minutes to get out once a fire starts.

Here are a few quick reminders:

✅ Test your smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button.
✅ Replace batteries at least once a year, or whenever the alarm chirps.
✅ Replace smoke alarms that are 10 years old or older.
✅ Install smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of your home.
✅ Never remove batteries because of nuisance alarms—instead, identify and correct the cause.

A working smoke alarm can cut the risk of dying in a home fire drastically. It only takes a few seconds to test your alarms, but those few seconds could save the lives of the people you love.

Take a moment today to press the test button and make sure your family is protected.

Stay safe,

– Timothy Andre
