PSA: From the desk of City Administrator David Wright:
I want to provide some clarification regarding the data center presentation on tonight’s City Council agenda.
Tonight’s discussion is informational and procedural. There is no item on the agenda tonight asking the Council to approve a tax abatement for the data center, nor is the Council voting tonight to approve the project itself.
The items being considered are about establishing a formal City process and framework for projects of this size and magnitude.
Before a major corporation can come to Cotulla requesting incentives, tax abatements, development agreements, or other considerations, the City needs to have clear procedures in place outlining how an application is submitted, reviewed, evaluated, negotiated, and ultimately brought before the City Council for consideration.
What Council approves tonight will help establish that process moving forward. It does not automatically approve an incentive for any company.
If the data center moves forward with a formal application, any specific tax abatement or development agreement would have to come back through the appropriate process and be presented to the City Council for consideration and action.
Projects of this magnitude can represent a significant opportunity for Cotulla, but they also deserve careful review, transparency, and a process that protects the interests of the City and its taxpayers.
Tonight is about building that process — not approving the deal.
