🚨 USDA Seeking Disaster Recovery Needs in Sunderlinville/Potter Brook, PA Area From July 6-7, 2026 Flooding 🚨

USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) State Conservationist Denise Coleman is conducting a rapid survey to determine if the impacts of flooding from the July 6-7, 2026 rainfall event have caused a watershed impairment and has left property owners at risk. The survey results will be used to determine if properties could be eligible for the Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP) Program. EWP is a recovery program aimed at relieving imminent hazards to life and property as a result of a significant flooding event.

Property owners who have been impacted by the storm event noted and feel the resulting damages would meet the eligibility requirements listed above, should complete an EWP Rapid Damage Response Form. Sometimes, it's the little things that remind us why what we're doing is important (as well as prove why it works)! Pictured here is our Dirt, Gravel, and Low Volume Roads Project Specialist, Morgan, holding one of those little things: a native brook trout! This little trout was found upstream of a recently replaced stream crossing, where prior to replacement there was no way for trout, or other aquatic organisms, to move upstream of the crossing.

Potter County Conservation District completed this project in July of 2025 utilizing Dirt and Gravel Roads Program funds, as well as collaborating with the Native Fish Coalition Pennsylvania Chapter to receive Coldwater Heritage Partnership funding. A 3-foot round pipe was replaced with a 14.4 foot bottomless arch culvert. Construction also included 101 feet of streambed remediation. The goal of this site was to not only allow for aquatic organism passage through the culvert, but also assist with flood resiliency and remove sediment pollution to Kortz Run, a Natural Reproduction Trout Stream that feeds into Germania Branch, a Class A Trout Stream!

Potter County Conservation District staff assisted Trout Unlimited with a fishery survey on Kortz Run both upstream and downstream of the culvert. While only two native brook trout were found upstream of the culvert, this is a sign that this project was successful and that the trout population within Germania Branch and Kortz Run now have access to 1.2 miles of previously inaccessible habitat!

Learn about the benefits of rain barrels and how to become a Master Gardener! Bring your questions and we'll answer better* than AI does - and we'll use less water to boot!

The first 25 participants who register will be able to take home a rain barrel and rain barrel conversion kit for free (an $80 value!). Please limit the barrels to one per household, but everyone who is planning to attend should register.

A longtime seed potato growing family in Potter County, Pennsylvania, Valery Barnett-Robbins and her husband, Chris, now operate the former Barnett Brothers Headwater Potatoes. Valerie and Chris are the fourth generation to operate the family farm and have transitioned the name of the farm to Barnett Farm.
