Please join us in welcoming Chelsea Thomas our new Watershed/Nutrient Management Technician to the Potter County Conservation District!

She brings a diverse background to this role — four years of service in the United States Marine Corps as an Expeditionary Airfield Services Technician, followed by hands-on experience as a Fish Culturist at the Oswayo State Fish Hatchery. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.

Having grown up in nearby Eldred, PA, she knows and loves this region well. She is passionate about protecting local watersheds and natural resources and is eager to put that passion to work serving the communities of Potter County.

Outside of work, she's a proud mom of two boys — most of her free time is spent cheering them on at their activities. When she gets a moment for herself, you'll find her running, mountain biking, or just exploring outside.

We're thrilled to have her on the team — don't hesitate to say hi! 👋

Each year, the 5th graders from the five Potter County schools attend Conservation Field Days held at the Potter County Fair Grounds.

This year the stations were as follows:
🐟 Watersheds and Aquatic Macroinvertebrates - Potter County Conservation District
🌷 Pollinators - Penn State Extension - Potter County
🐦 Birding - DCRN State Parks - Sinnemahoning State Park
🍁 Maple Syrup - Sons of Dunn Family Farm
🦝 Wildlife - Pennsylvania Game Commission
🌳 Forestry - Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources

"Take chances! Make mistakes! Get messy!" 👩‍🦱🦎🌞🌍🪐

Ms. Frizzle had it right - the best way to learn is by doing! The Potter County Conservation District was invited by CoudySchools to Remake Learning Days "From Field to Future" on Thursday. Students had the opportunity to explore a variety of hands-on activities from many area agencies.

The students enjoyed seeing what happened when they played in the stream table. What happens when the stream is straight? Does dredging out the sediment make the stream better? Are there ways to stabilize the stream banks? What size pipe do I need to make a good stream crossing? Can a dam hold back all this water if I just make a big wall?

Playing is serious business and you retain about 90% of what you learn when you do something hands-on!

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection will be holding a community climate conservation at the St.Marys Public Library on June 1st from 5-7pm.

The workshop will include a facilitated listening session and open discussion, followed by a short presentation. Their goal is to hear directly from community members and stakeholders about their experiences, concerns, and ideas related to climate and environmental challenges.

Want to explore the outdoors with other women in a collaborative, supportive environment? Register for Women in the Wilds at Sinnemahoning State Park, held from June 19th - June 21st!

We still have a few spots left in our annual Women in the Wilds Weekend! Women in the Wilds is a full weekend of outdoor recreation and environmental education activities for ladies only.

The $125 program fee covers all food and program supplies for the weekend as well as an event T-Shirt.

"The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. The second best time is now."

The Black Forest Conservation Association partnered with the Potter County Conservation District and Terry and Stephanie Gerhart to plant nearly 300 trees and shrubs on Saturday, May 2nd.

The small but mighty team finished planting the trees and installing the tubes in about four hours.
