Just because it’s a “normal” day at the office
doesn’t mean it’s not heavy.

You’re allowed to feel it.
You’re allowed to talk about it.
And it’s okay to ask for help when you need it. 💛

This is why we need to keep our heads on a swivel and protect our scenes. Remember WE have control of the scene, shut it down if necessary and use the truck to block off our safety!!

This morning, Brodhead Fire Department responded to an injury accident on I-75 northbound at the 69.8 mile marker.

Upon arrival, Engine 11 was positioned in a blocking position to protect the scene, closing the right travel lane. Command 12 was positioned well in advance of the incident as a warning vehicle to provide additional scene protection for responders and motorists.

While crews were operating on the scene, a passenger vehicle failed to move over and struck Engine 11 on the driver’s side. As a result of the collision, one Brodhead firefighter was transported from the scene to Saint Joseph Berea for evaluation and has since been treated and released. The occupant of the passenger vehicle refused treatment and transport at the scene.

Kentucky State Police Post 11 responded and is actively investigating both collisions.

This incident serves as an important reminder that Kentucky’s Move Over Law exists to protect emergency responders, law enforcement, tow operators, highway workers, and the motoring public. When you see emergency vehicles with lights activated, slow down and move over. If you cannot safely move over, reduce your speed and proceed with extreme caution.

Thankfully, today’s incident did not result in more serious injuries.

🚨 23-YEAR-OLD VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER JACOB SPAULDING IN COMA AFTER MAINE LUMBER MILL EXPLOSION
📅 May 19, 2026

Jacob Spaulding, a 23-year-old volunteer firefighter, is in a medically induced coma after suffering severe injuries in a powerful explosion at a Maine lumber mill, officials and family sources confirmed.

Spaulding was responding as part of emergency efforts when the blast occurred, leaving him critically injured. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital before being moved for specialized care, where he remains under intensive medical supervision.

Doctors placed him in a medically induced coma due to the severity of his condition as they continue treating his injuries. Family members say his condition is serious, and he faces a difficult and uncertain recovery ahead.

The explosion at the lumber mill also injured multiple responders and workers, with emergency crews describing the scene as chaotic and dangerous as fire and debris spread through the facility.

Spaulding is a volunteer firefighter known in his community for his commitment to public service at a young age. Friends and colleagues have expressed shock and concern, calling him dedicated and brave for responding to emergencies despite his age.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the explosion, with safety officials reviewing the site and examining whether industrial conditions or equipment failure played a role.

Community members have begun sharing messages of support and prayers for Spaulding and the other injured victims as recovery efforts continue.
