Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry Regiment facilitated a workout to honor the memory of a fallen Soldier from our sister Battalion, 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry Regiment. This exercise was titled “The Donny” and challenged Soldiers to complete a series of deadlifts and burpees in under 20 minutes.

U.S. Army National Guard Spc. Donald L. Nichols, 21, died in Mehtar Lam district, Afghanistan, on April 13, 2011. Supporting Operation Enduring Freedom, the Shell Rock, Iowa native fell casualty to wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device. Donald’s older brother Joe was also stationed in Afghanistan with an Army Reserve unit at the same time.

Joe flew home on the airplane that also carried his brother’s body. He would serve as a pallbearer for his brother. He notes: “If I would have known that I was going to be 10,000 feet in the air, on a plane with my little brother’s body under my feet, I would go back to every time we ever got a chance to talk to each other and tell him how much I respected and loved him. And he should never look up to me, but I should look up to him because he is a true hero.”

The LETHAL Battalion started off the new year with the first Soldier and Noncommissioned Officer of the Month boards. Boards are comprised of a physical fitness test, weapons qualification, military appearance and bearing, and questions from multiple regulations. Soldiers train for the month prior and come together in a healthy competition to see who can perform the best across all categories and receive the highest overall score.

SPC Nathan Mills from Bravo Company and SGT William Krehbiel of Delta Company were the month of January winners. Congratulations to them on their hard work!

Whether deployed or at home, units are visited by high-ranking leadership who like to see the ins and outs of unit operations and meet Soldiers across all leadership levels. Distinguished visitors afford leadership to the opportunity to recognize Soldiers that go above and beyond everyday to ensure all operations are smooth and missions are successful. Recently, the 1-168 Infantry Battalion welcomed Lieutenant General Jonathan Stubbs, who recognized SSG Caleb McMillen and SGT Alexander Hassan of Alpha Company, and SGT Steven Corrin and 1SG Jamie Bricker of Delta Company for their outstanding leadership and performance while deployed.

Maintaining proficiency of soldier skills and training is essential to mission readiness. Soldiers from across the1-168 Infantry Battalion conducted a 120 MM live fire exercise to ensure mortarmen and forward observers maintain combat effectiveness. Live fire exercises entail forward observers identifying a target, calling up grid coordinates to mortar sections, who then provide accurate and timely fires. Together the group effectively hit all identified targets throughout the exercise.

Being deployed not only means being focused on our current environment, it means focusing on how best to prepare for when we return home and who is ready to lead. Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1-168 Infantry Battalion had the honor of promoting two exceptional Soldiers and welcoming two new NCOs into the corps. This is a great example of hardworking leaders being carefully selected to be a source of guidance for new Soldiers.

CPT Cale Yates is the Chief of Logistics (the “S4”) for the 1-168 Infantry Battalion. However, when he is not in uniform supporting the battalion, he is an art teacher for West Elementary School in Glenwood, Iowa. He was recently able to blend both of those worlds and put his artistic talent to use painting the battalion deployment mural. Painting unit murals has long been a military tradition. They represent the hard work and dedication of each unit that deployed to a particular location and are a way for the unit to leave its mark long after returning home. Yates was able to take this tradition up a notch, painting the 1-168 mural in the tradition of a medieval coat of arms, which happens to be a passion of his. With the help of SPC Rose Hutson and several other Soldiers in the battalion, he transformed ordinary T-walls into a meaningful depiction of the LETHAL contribution to Operation Inherent Resolve. CPT Yates explains the symbolism of the coat of arms below.

-The Symbolism and History of Medieval Heraldry
The world of medieval heraldry stems from the need to identify individuals and their affiliations on the battlefield. Filled with symbolism, one’s coat of arms tells a story of what they have done and what they value. Similar to the ribbons a service member wears on their coat, simple imagery can tell much about a person or group. Below are the traditional parts of the “Coat of Arms”.

Escutcheon (shield): The centerpiece where symbols and colors are used to convey the values and accomplishments of the individual, which are then passed on.

Supports/Charges: Set on the side to support the escutcheon, these are typically depicted as animals or plants.

Ordinaries: Separate the escutcheon into fields to distinguish the imagery. The shape and manner of the division carries symbolic intent.

Helm: The helmet laid atop the escutcheon typically pertains to region or heritage.

Crest: The figure laid atop the helm

Name/Motto: Traditionally written out on banners over and under the escutcheon.

Mantle: Decorative elements flowing from the helm and framing the entire piece.

Void: Place of highest honor on the escutcheon right in the center of the field.

Color: Known as the tincture, carries significant meaning within the imagery on the coat of arms.

Gules/red: courage and strength

Azure/blue: loyalty and truth

Vert/Green: hope and joy

Sable/black: constancy or grief

Purpure/purple: royalty and justice

Gold (metal): generosity, wisdom, glory

Silver (metal): peace, sincerity, purity
