Mask Mandate for Public Transportation Still in Effect

While changes have been announced to loosen restrictions on wearing masks in certain situations, the federal mask mandate for public transportation remains in effect. The requirements are applied to all persons who use public transportation including those who are vaccinated. Passengers who refuse to wear masks may be denied travel.

Island Transit is continuing to require operators and passengers over the age of two to wear a mask in compliance with the federal mask mandate. Island Transit continues to follow public health guidelines taking extraordinary measures to create a safe and reliable transit system for everyone. #masks #islandtransit #islandcounty #maskmandate

Continued restoration work turns up the volume on Deception Pass bridge

Heads up for travelers passing over Deception Pass: Returning summer weather cranks up sandblasting work on the historic Deception Pass bridge, beginning Friday, May 28.

This may impact travel or commuter plans with some potential delays anticipated. Please give yourself plenty of travel time - especially on sunny days when more folks visit the bridge while crews are sandblasting.

At this time there are no delays.

Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation completed painting Canoe Pass bridge and will start sandblasting and removing old paint on Deception Pass bridge. This work is part of a multi-year project to preserve the iconic structures.

Good morning Island Community!

Sadly we have to report that two of our bus shelters have been vandalized over this past weekend May 22. It is disappointing and disheartening to have to respond to this kind of damage let alone extremely disrespectful to our community members and our riders who take the bus and need to use the shelters (especially in inclement weather). The incidents happened at the shelters located at Monroe and Arnold and one panel at Sharon Street. If you have information or believe you know who may be responsible please contact OHPD or our dispatch center at 360.678.7771.

Thanks for all the support! Our crews work hard to make sure the shelters are clean and safe to use.

Island Transit staff joined Oak Harbor Councilmember and Island Transit Board Member Beth Munns at the North Whidbey Help House to load up and deliver food as part of our Island Transit Cares program. With some team work and a few muscles we loaded up 50 bags of groceries, more than a dozen boxes of frozen food, and a few other items for delivery.

Potential Delay:

Heads up for potential delays at Heller and the Ault Field roundabout. The county is setting up for construction but have informed us that they plan to leave one lane open all day and have flaggers to assist with the flow of traffic. We expect traffic to flow smoothly; however, shift change at the base could impact travel times.

Please remember that the flaggers are there to keep everyone safe! Slow down, keep an eye on the crews, flaggers, pedestrians, transit riders, and other vehicles.

Stay Safe and bring those umbrellas!

If you haven't heard - Community Surplus Vehicle Program for Non-Profit Agencies is here and now! Applications are due by June 4!

The vehicles, originally part of Island Transit’s fleet, will be used to improve equitable access to transportation throughout Whidbey and Camano Islands and strengthen connections in the community. Vehicles in the program were purchased with public funds and have reached the end of their useful transit life. This is a competitive program, averaging over 30 applications in each surplus year, with only 14 vehicles available in 2021. Vehicles not surplussed will be auctioned at a future date.

All qualified 501(c)3 organizations with transportation needs are encouraged to apply. Recipients will be chosen through a competitive process based on how they propose to use the vehicles to serve their communities. Applicants must be prepared to demonstrate current 501(c)3 status.

Program materials and documentation are available online www.islandtransit.org.
Interested applicants are invited to preview available vehicles; this is in-person and by appointment only from May 17-21. All safety measures will be in effect including required
masks and social distancing. Appointments can be made via email to [email protected].

Recipients will be announced to the public on June 22.

Applicants who require assistance with obtaining materials or have questions about the program may contact the main office at 360-678-7771.

Completed applications should be
emailed to: [email protected] or mailed to: Island Transit, 19758 SR 20, Coupeville, WA
98239, ATTN: CSVP.

Applications must be postmarked no later than June 4, 2021.

Temporary detour for folks riding to or from the Clinton ferry terminal:

PSE is currently working on power poles at the intersection of Berg and Humphrey. The bus will not be driving through Central to Berg to Humphrey - instead detour Deerlake to Commercial and back to SR20.

This affects Routes 1NB and 60.

We will update as road conditions change.

Thanks to Island County ACAC (Accessible Communities Advisory Committee) for their grant to provide seats for those who can walk to a bus stop but can’t stand for very long, which would allow them to use a fixed route bus service. They can be more active and engaged in the community and not dependent on paratransit. This project was led by two of our committee representatives, Maribeth and Dee. Their hard work, along with support from our operations and facilities made this project a success. The funding used was a grant issued in 2020. Most of the seats have been installed - we have a few more to go!

Thanks team!
