High blood pressure is a leading cause of heart disease. Nearly half of the adults in the United States have high blood pressure, which puts them at risk for heart disease and stroke. Just 1 in 4 people with high blood pressure has it under control.

Managing blood pressure is crucial for overall health:

Eat a nutrition-rich diet. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, while reducing saturated fat and cholesterol. There are local farmers markets across Island County that are great places to find locally grown produce.
Increase your physical activity. Exercise can significantly lower blood pressure, reducing your risk for heart disease.
Manage your stress. Since stress can affect blood pressure, consider stress management techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and yoga.
Make sure you are getting screened by your healthcare provider on a regular basis.

Our Plant of the Month is American Dunegrass!

Dunegrass is a resilient grass on the backshore of the beach that helps control coastal erosion by cutting winds and guarding against storms. It can tolerate salt spray, unstable substrates, low nutrients, and little to no freshwater!

: Eating Disorder mention.

Every year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health recognizes National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, from February 24th to March 2nd, 2025. This observance highlights the seriousness of eating disorders across the United States.

An estimated 28.8 million American - 9% of the total population - will experience an eating disorder in their lifetime. Let’s work together to erase the stigma around eating disorders, address the inequalities surrounding treatment and diagnosis, and encourage self-advocacy when seeking support and recovery.

For more information about National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, you can access the toolkit and resources here: https://www.womenshealth.gov/nedaw

Help us reverse the trends. Youth are not exercising enough in Island County with only 14% of 10th graders reporting sufficient exercise per day in 2021. According to surveys in our community, 75% of Island County teens report having three or more hours of screen time per day, which can be linked to obesity, sleep disorders, anxiety, and depression.

Organized activities can be an alternative to exercise at parks for our younger community members, getting them off their screens and into an interactive program. The HIYI initiative not only supports our kids’ health and well-being, but also strengthens the fabric of our entire community.

Helps us shape a brighter, healthier future for Island County’s youth. For more information about the HIYI program and how you can contribute, please visit our web page on the Island County website: https://www.islandcountywa.gov/351/Healthy-Island-Youth-Initiative
