Collaboration Between Courtdale and Luzerne Borough Police Departments: Providing Child ID Kits for Local Families

In an effort to enhance child safety, the Courtdale and Luzerne Borough Police Departments have teamed up to provide Child ID kits to families in their communities. These kits are essential safety tools designed to protect children by ensuring law enforcement has immediate access to vital, up-to-date information in the unfortunate event that a child goes missing.

The Importance of Child ID Kits:

Child ID kits serve as an invaluable resource for parents and guardians, acting as an insurance policy that can save critical time during the frantic early hours of a search. Here’s how these kits help:

*Instant Access to Vital Data
In an emergency situation, parents can quickly provide authorities with an up-to-date record of their child's physical characteristics, including weight, height, eye and hair color, and any medical or identifying features. This information is crucial for law enforcement in identifying and locating the child.

*Expedited Amber Alerts
To issue an Amber Alert, law enforcement requires specific descriptive information about the missing child. Having a readily available, high-quality photograph and a detailed physical profile prevents delays that can hinder the search and rescue process.

*Readily Available DNA
Child ID kits offer a secure method to store a child's DNA sample, such as a saliva swab or hair strand, as well as tooth impressions. This provides police with immediate, uncontaminated material that can be used for identification or tracking purposes.

*Inkless Fingerprints
Fingerprints are unique and do not change over time, making them a reliable form of identification. The kits allow parents to collect their child's fingerprints without the mess of ink, ensuring a clean and straightforward process.

*Privacy and Control
One of the key benefits of these kits is that they are intended to be kept securely at home by the parent or guardian. This means that no government or corporate database holds sensitive biometric information, helping to keep your child's data private and under your control.

Best Practices for Using Child ID Kits

To maximize the effectiveness of Child ID kits, consider the following best practices:

*Where to Keep It: Store the physical kit in a secure, easily accessible location, such as a fireproof safe at home.

*When to Update: Children grow and change rapidly. It is advisable to update the photograph and physical descriptions every six months for young children and toddlers, and at least once a year for older children.

*Digital Alternatives: For those who prefer a digital format, the FBI offers the official FBI Child ID App, which allows parents to safely store photos and details directly on their smartphones.

*Where to Obtain Kits: We have free physical copies of Child ID kits and they are available for residents with children in Courtdale or Luzerne Borough.

****Residents of other jurisdictions check with your local police department on availability of these kits, your departments may have them. Feel free to use the images in this post from our kits to develop your own so you have all the necessary information and more, in the event of a missing child case****

The collaboration between the Courtdale and Luzerne Borough Police Departments in providing Child ID kits exemplifies a proactive approach to child safety in our communities. By equipping families with these essential tools, they ensure that parents have the necessary resources to protect their children, enhancing the overall safety and well-being of our neighborhoods. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of this initiative and secure Child ID kits for their children, as it is a small step that can make a significant difference in an emergency.

***Found a Gray Male Pit Bull Dog - Super Friendly***

If anyone knows the owners of this guy, unfortunately I had to run him up to the SPCA of Luzerne County.

He is friendly and decided to jump in a guys car on Kelly Street. He didn’t want to leave but caused no harm , just wants someone to take him home to mom or dad.

Let us know if anyone knows the owners.

Thanks!
