The Equity, Cultural, and Social Justice Commission invites you to join them in recognizing Poverty in America Awareness Month, a time to highlight the challenges millions face and to encourage action that supports equity and opportunity.

Poverty is shaped by factors like income inequality, racial inequity, housing instability, and limited access to healthcare, education, and fair work. This month, let’s learn, support our communities, and work toward lasting solutions.

Ways to get involved:
✔ Learn about the root causes of poverty
✔ Advocate for equitable policies
✔ Volunteer or donate to community efforts
✔ Explore and support local resources at www.covingtonwa.gov/residentresources.php

Consider using this month to support your neighbors and advance a more equitable society.

Long but hopefully helpful post about flooding and storm-related resources!

We know the recent storms and flooding have been stressful and disruptive for many in our community, and it’s not over yet. If you or anyone you know has a home that has been impacted, please know you are not alone and help may be available.

If your home experienced flooding or storm-related damage, here are important steps to take:

1️⃣ Document the damage - When it is safe to do so, take photos or videos of any damage (including crawl spaces, basements, or utilities). Keep receipts for any emergency repairs—this documentation is important for potential assistance.

2️⃣ Check your insurance coverage - If you have homeowners or renters insurance, contact your insurance provider as soon as possible to report the damage and begin a claim.

3️⃣ Report your damage to King County Emergency Management - Reporting storm or flood damage is extremely important. These reports help local and regional agencies understand the full impact of the storm and may influence whether additional state or federal disaster resources become available, even if you do not need immediate assistance. Report damage here at https://kcemergency.com

4️⃣ Reach out for local assistance and nonprofit support - Several local organizations may be able to help with emergency needs, housing stability, food, or financial assistance, depending on eligibility and availability:

Catholic Community Services of Western Washington
May help with housing stability, emergency needs, and case management
https://ccsww.org

The Salvation Army (South King County)
May provide emergency assistance, financial help, food support, or referrals
https://northwest.salvationarmy.org

Call 2-1-1 (United Way of King County) – Dial 211 or visit www.uwkc.org/need-help to be connected with local resources, disaster assistance, and nonprofit services in your area

5️⃣ Regional, State, and Federal Resources

King County Housing Repair Program
May offer assistance for income-qualified homeowners needing critical health and safety repairs
https://kingcounty.gov/housingrepair

Washington State Disaster Cash Assistance Program (DCAP)
May provide short-term financial help to eligible households experiencing disaster-related needs
www.dshs.wa.gov/esa/disaster-cash-assistance

FEMA Disaster Assistance
Since the local flooding is now a federal disaster, FEMA assistance may become available for eligible residents
www.disasterassistance.gov

We will continue to share updates as additional resources or programs become available.

It is an honor to be at Tahoma National Cemetery today to honor those who are laid to rest here.
