Covington Professional Firefighters Local 38 Covington Fire Department is a union fire department with the IAFF (International Association of Fire Fighters) Local 38.

The Covington Fire Department is a full service agency of the City of Covington, here to assist our 40,000+ residents, as well as, businesses and visitors, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. As a full service agency, we provide not only emergency services, but also information and educational opportunities, which is just a small amount of what we do for the community. The department was inducted as a charter member of the IAFF in 1918.

We are saddened to announce the passing of retired fireman James Patrick β€œJim” Halpin Sr. Brother Halpin honorably served the City of Covington for over two decades. Please keep the family and friends in your prayers. πŸ™β€οΈπŸš’

James Patrick "Jim" Halpin, Sr., 79, of Taylor Mill, KY, passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. He was a retired firefighter with 20+ years of service in Covington, KY. After retirement, Jim enjoyed golfing and was an assistant grounds crew manager at Twin Oaks golf course. He was a member of Holy Cross Parish in Covington (Latonia), KY, and was a member of Covington Moose Lodge #1469 in Taylor Mill, KY. Jim was preceded in death by his parents: James and Dorothy Halpin and brother: Richard Halpin. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years: Sharon L. Halpin; sons: James P. (Julie) Halpin, Jr. and Steven D. Halpin; siblings: John (Tina) Halpin, Mary (late: Mike) Taney, Pat (late: Denny) Taney, Dennis Halpin and Bill (Kathy) Halpin; 5 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Holy Cross Church, 3612 Church Street, Covington (Latonia), KY 41015. A Celebration of Life for Jim will take place following Mass at the Covington Firefighters Association, 2232 Howell Street, Covington, KY 41014 until 4:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Covington (Latonia), KY 41015 is serving the family. A team of our members placed first πŸ₯‡ in the Fight For Air Climb hosted by the American Lung Association. Our team had 5 members place in the top 10, as well as the top overall participant. We would like to congratulate our team on their victory as they secured the top overall team for the 9th year in a row. Great job!
