March 18th 2008
One of the largest and most spectacular fires occurred on this day at the Covington Ford dealership located on Monroe Avenue. The original call came in around 6 PM for smoke in the building. Fire was discovered on the 2nd floor in a storage area. A 2 1/2 inch hose line was deployed to try and knock the fire down. Unfortunately it had gained a foothold in the cockloft ,causing the fire to spread the length of the 2nd floor. With conditions deteriorating inside crews started to back out the structure. A crew in the aerial platform noticed the roof starting to sag. The incident commander ordered crews to withdraw from the structure and airhorns were sounded. Shortly after, members exited the building, the roof collapsed sending flames high above the building. All members were accounted for and uninjured. At the height of the fire, two aerial master streams, two master streams from the two fire engines, and multiple exterior handlines were being used to bring the fire under control. Mutual aid from multiple Alleghany County departments were requested. Mutual aid Departments were either on scene or covering other calls. Units remained on scene until 6 PM the next day. The fire was determined to be electrical and originated on the second floor.

Virginia’s spring fire season is here, officially Feb. 15 – April 30. During that time, the statewide burn law is in effect, which prohibits outdoor fires between midnight and 4 p.m. πŸ”₯🚫

Don't be fooled by the snow! Most of Virginia is in a drought caused by months of below-average rainfall. Already this year, DOF has responded to 80 wildfires that have burned nearly 800 acres.

The best ways you can prevent wildfires:
πŸ”₯ Wait until after the fire season to burn yard debris
πŸ”₯ If you must burn, avoid windy days
πŸ”₯ Never leave a fire unattended
πŸ”₯ Know the state burn law and local restrictions

Get more tips, and learn about the 4 p.m. burning law on DOF’s website: https://ow.ly/3SsV50Yey8q
