The City of Covington is accepting applications for the following position:

Part-Time Automotive Mechanic

General Description
This position performs skilled work of the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of gasoline- and diesel-powered automotive and other mechanical equipment. Work includes performing skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of automobiles, light and heavy trucks, and a variety of medium and heavy construction equipment. Work is performed in accordance with standard practices of the trade and requires independent judgment in diagnosing defects and determining repair methods. Work is reviewed through inspection in process or after completion.

Requirements/Preferences
High School diploma or GED and two years of mechanical repair experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Commonwealth of Virginia driverโ€™s license and good driving record. A Virginia CDL is preferred or the ability to obtain one within one year of employment is required.
Salary and Benefits
Starting salary is negotiable dependent upon qualifications and certifications. Following a conditional offer of employment, applicant must pass a physical examination and drug test.

To consider and vote on Resolution R-26-24: At the request of Alleghany Highlands Public Schools, requesting that the Alleghany Circuit Court place a referendum on the November 3, 2026 ballot regarding whether the City of Covington may levy an additional local sales tax at a rate not to exceed one percent for school construction and renovation projects.
4. To consider and vote on Resolution R-26-25: Appropriating $800.00 in DARE contribution funds received by check for the City of Covington Police Department DARE Program. No City Match.
APPOINTMENTS:
1. To consider and reappoint John โ€œJayโ€ Crowder to the Covington Planning Commission.
Mr. Crowderโ€™s term expired on June 30, 2026.

The City of Covington Commissioner of the Revenue office has a full-time position open for Deputy Commissioner of the Revenue. Duties include but are not limited to general office work (filing, answering the phone, and assisting taxpayers) as well as other specialized work such as data entry and analysis, tax assessment, and reading deeds and wills for real estate transfers and real estate mapping. Basic knowledge in preparing federal and state income taxes would be helpful. Computer experience in Word and Excel is required. Applicants should have experience in working with the public. Only high school graduates who have office experience will be considered. Starting salary is $37,964 with an excellent benefit package. Please submit a resume and state application to P. O.
