As ATV/UTV season approaches, the City of Crandon would like to remind residents and visitors of the rules and regulations for operating off-road vehicles within city limits.

ATVs and UTVs are permitted on most city streets; however, operation is not allowed on numbered state highways unless a designated trail runs alongside the roadway. Examples of restricted routes include Lake Avenue, Pioneer Street (from Hwy 55 west to Hwy -8- east), Glen Street (west of Hwy -8-), and Lake Avenue north (Hwy 32/55), unless otherwise posted.

Riders may cross state highways but may not travel along them. For instance, if traveling west from Madison Street toward Rhinelander via the state trail, you may cross Lake Avenue (Hwy -8-), but not ride along it.

While operating on city streets, please drive responsibly and obey all posted traffic signs and speed limits. Most city streets in Crandon have a 25 MPH speed limit.

For safety and compliance, flashing lights, whip antenna lights, and similar off-road lighting must be turned off while operating on city roads. Please note that blue flashing lights are illegal on any vehicle on or visible from a roadway in the State of Wisconsin. A white headlight(s) and a red taillight(s) is required to be on when driving on roadways regardless if it's day or night.

Operating an ATV/UTV under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited and will be enforced on both city streets and state trails.

Our goal is for everyone to enjoy a fun and safe riding season. This information is provided to help educate riders on local regulations. If you plan to ride outside of Forest County, please review local ordinances, as rules may vary by area.

For more information on statewide regulations and frequently asked questions, please visit the Wisconsin DNR:

Please follow your local ATV clubs pages to learn more about when and what trails are open.
Forest County ATV Association is the local page for our area.

Attention: A natural gas line was hit behind the area of Baked Pizza and Flowers from the Heart. The line is closed and the area is safe at this time but the smell of gas is still in the area. There is no need to call dispatch if you drive by and smell gas. If you smell gas in your business or apartment near that area please try and air out your building and contact WPS if you suspect a leak in your building. WPS should be on scene shortly to fix the damaged pipe.

Join us in welcoming K9 Timber to our department and our community. Be sure to follow the K9 page for more updates and upcoming events.

Join us and congratulating K9 Timber on completing his intense 5 week K9 course. He will begin work in the streets of Crandon and Forest County next week.

K9 Timber is trained in several different skill sets to include drug detection, suspect apprehension, as well as tracking and searching.

Even though K9 Timber and his handler Officer Staffeld have completed their basic canine course their training isn't over. They will continue to improve on the skills they have already been trained in as well as adding new ones.

K9 Timber is excited to start working in the community and looks forward to meeting community members. We will have an opportunity to meet K9 Timber at our March fundraiser.

If you have any questions about the canine feel free to ask and we will do our best to answer them.
