Ed's Lake Trail

Ed's Lake Trail A quiet trail through birch and hardwood forest. In winter a cross-country ski trail that works well as a hiking trail throughout the rest of the year.

Along the way the route passes picturesque hemlock and birch groves to small Ed's Lake.

Hello open water! Time to put the skis in the closet and get out the hiking boots. Ice went off Ed's Lake Monday, 19 March 2012. Earliest since we've been keeping track.

A little snow this morning but you still can find Hepatica blooming along your path and the Ed's Lake loons (Kate & Alex) have come home and are calling. Sandhill Cranes "dancing" in the wetland.

Pack a picnic and hike the trial to the lake - it's Ice Off Day here at Ed's Lake! Sun is shining, ice sparkling, and the birds waiting. First perch already spotted.

Any guesses for ice-off date at Ed's Lake this year?

fall colors starting to come in, migrating birds heard in the early morning and ducks can be spotted out on the lake. Great time to visit the trail!

tiny tiny cranberries and sundews are blooming on the bogs, little white Pyrola in the woods, pinesap and indian pipe are up, and that splash of bright yellow is Amanita muscari formosa. Don't let a "little" rain stop you from a nice early July walk on the trail to see the seasonal woodland show.

Great weekend to walk the trail and see spring wildflowers. Starflowers still in bloom, bunchberry just coming in, Clintonia at their peek, solomon'seal, the large-flowered trillium have tiurned pink and fading fast, blueberries in bloom, little purple polygala and if you venture into the bog the sundew are out and bog laurel at their peek. Come on out and take a peek!

Last snow fall of the season today? Looks like over an 1" already and still coming down. Loons calling on the lake, maple glowing red and budding out, and clean white snow blanketing the view. Great day to enjoy April in the Northwoods!

with daytime temps in the 70's, it's a good time to be out enjoying springtime in the Northwoods.
