COMMUNITY TRAFFIC NOTICE – LAKE AVE AREA

We have recently received several concerns and heard discussion within the community regarding the dirt path located off Lake Ave on the north side of town. Some motorists have been using this path as an alternative route around the current Highway 32 construction.

The Crandon Police Department is currently working to determine the legal status of vehicle travel on this path. Portions of the south end involve Wisconsin Department of Transportation highway property and DNR-managed land, while a portion of the north end crosses private property. The appropriate state agencies have been made aware of the situation and will determine whether any additional restrictions or signage are necessary on their respective property.

At this time, our primary concern is not simply that people are using the path, but the manner in which some vehicles are being driven on the path and throughout the surrounding neighborhood.

Under normal circumstances, this neighborhood sees relatively little traffic when Highway 32 is open. With the construction and resulting increase in vehicles, there is an increased safety concern for residents, pedestrians, and especially children who live and play in the area.

We are asking everyone traveling through this neighborhood to slow down, drive responsibly, and use extra caution.

Due to the increased traffic and safety concerns, officers will also be conducting increased traffic enforcement in this area. Our goal is not to issue citations unnecessarily, and we generally prefer to educate drivers and use warnings when circumstances allow. However, given the increased risk to residents in this neighborhood, traffic violations that create a safety concern will be addressed more strictly.

We understand that road construction and detours can be frustrating and inconvenient, and we appreciate everyone's patience while the Highway 32 project continues.

Thank you to everyone in our community for slowing down, driving responsibly, and helping us keep our neighborhoods safe.

Strong to severe storms are expected on Monday, July 20th, 2026 with the potential for:
🌬️ Damaging high winds
🌪️ Possible tornadoes
⚡ Frequent lightning
🌧️ Heavy rainfall

Now is the time to prepare:
🔸Secure or bring inside outdoor furniture, grills, trampolines, garbage cans, and other loose yard items.
🔸Charge your cell phone and portable battery packs.
🔸Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, especially overnight. Don’t rely on outdoor warning sirens.
🔸Know where you’ll take shelter if a warning is issued. The safest place is a basement or an interior room on the lowest level, away from windows.

Taking a few minutes to prepare now can make a big difference. Stay weather aware, monitor the forecast.
