FINAL PUBLIC ADVISORY

Box Turtle Update – Final Week

As of August 9 a total of 196 Box Turtles have been recovered. Starting today, Essex County’s Turtle Back Zoo will assist in temporary care of any additional turtles brought to the Fire Department. NJDEP Fish and Wildlife staff will then transport turtles from the Zoo to Mercer County Wildlife Center. Thank you to Animal Control Solutions for the daily turtle taxi rides since the very first day back on July 29!

What’s Next?

• Turtles can continue to be recovered and brought to the Fire Department through August 16. This will be the final day.
o As per the last update, the search area should be limited to within a ½ mile radius from the intersection of Riverside Drive and Casino Avenue (where the turtles were first dumped) and a search focus in residential areas. Any Three-toed Box Turtles, those with the plainer olive/brown shells and non-native to NJ, should be brought to the Fire Department if found within 1-mile from the dump spot.
o Other wild turtle species and Box Turtles from outside of this radius will be turned away and wild turtles should be released back at their point of capture.
• Additional questions can be addressed to NJDEP Fish and Wildlife’s Endangered and Nongame Species Program through their email address: NJDEP Nongame [email protected].
