WINTER STORM WARNINGS EXPANDED, Include NYC Metro, NENJ, and Western Long Island

Winter Storm Warnings have been expanded and go into effect at 2 pm Wednesday and continue through 1 pm Thursday. 12-16 inches west, 5-10 east, less along the coast (Winter Storm Watch continues along Long Island due to uncertainties with sleet mixing in which would lower totals).

Now is the time to rush to complete all necessary preparations before the onset of winter weather tomorrow afternoon. Also note that any deviations in the storm track could raise or lower snowfall totals. Interior sections are definitely in for a heavy snowfall.

It's nowcasting time. Let's see how this storm plays out. Be safe everyone! - Matt

It's worth mentioning that models are beginning to hint towards a warmer storm which would mean lower snowfall totals and more mixing/rain for southeastern sections. More on this later. - Matt

Winter Storm Warnings Issued, Watches Continue Elsewhere

Good morning! We're still on track to experience a significant winter storm from Wednesday evening through Thursday morning. There are a few changes to the watches, warnings, and advisories in effect.

A Winter Storm Warning (pink) has been issued for much of central and northern New Jersey (excluding urban northeast New Jersey) from 10 am Wednesday to 10 am Thursday. Accumulations of 8-12 inches with locally higher amounts are possible, especially where the heaviest snowbands set up.

A Winter Storm Watch (dark blue) continues for the NYC metro area, Long Island, the lower Hudson valley, and Connecticut. Accumulations here are also appearing to be 8-12" with locally higher amounts, especially the further north and west you go. There remains uncertainty across Long Island regarding precipitation type and if there will be any mixing. If so, snowfall accumulations will be lesser there. Something to keep an eye on.

A High Wind Watch has been issued for coastal NJ from Sandy Hook down through Cape May from Wednesday evening through late Wednesday night. Winds up to 55 mph possible.

A Coastal Flood Watch remains in effect for coastal NJ from Sandy Hook down through Cape May from Thursday morning through Thursday afternoon. 1-2 feet of inundation above ground level is possible during the times of high tide.

Stay tuned for further update as we go throughout the day! - Matt

WINTER STORM WATCH REGIONWIDE - Significant Winter Storm on the Horizon

A significant winter storm is on tap for Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning for the entire region. Please understand that since we’re still a day or so out from the onset of winter weather forecasted snowfall amounts can (and will) change. As of now, a widespread 12-18” storm with some areas reaching 24”.

Coastal areas, especially further south, are in the battleground area where precipitation type and amount are still in question. No doubt, the further north you go the more snow. Coastal flooding of moderate severity is possible Thursday morning through Thursday evening along the Jersey Shore.

Lots to discuss and lots to watch as we draw closer to this storm.

Now is the time to complete all shopping and preparations before the onset of winter weather conditions Wednesday evening. - Matt

Today’s Marginal Risk for severe weather has now been upgraded to a Slight Risk. Confidence in a squall line of showers/storms has increased, and the potential for damaging winds along the line increased causing the upgrade. Timing appears to be 5-10 pm from west to east.

Storms today may contain little to no lightning. Keep an eye to the sky and be prepared to seek shelter should severe weather threaten. - Matt
