The Rhode Island Department of Corrections (RIDOC) has internship opportunities for college students this summer. The RIDOC Summer Internship Correctional Academy is a nine-week program designed to provide students with a comprehensive overview of the Department’s operations. Throughout the program, subject matter experts from various divisions present on the roles and responsibilities of their units and how they contribute to the daily functioning of a correctional environment.

Participants will engage in guided tours of all facilities and gain insight into the educational opportunities, institutional programming, and vocational training available to the incarcerated population. Please note that this is an unpaid internship experience; however, it is intended to serve as an informational academy that offers transparency into RIDOC operations and helps students identify areas of interest for potential internships during the Fall and/or Spring semesters. Application deadline is May 26.

We are pleased to celebrate the retirement of our colleague Assistant Director Barry Weiner after 43 years of public service in the field of corrections. RIDOC is better for having him. Throughout his career, Barry worked as a line officer, supervisor, chief, and Assistant Director. His early career included roles as a drug and alcohol treatment counselor, deputy director of a halfway house, and federal probation officer in New York City. He transferred to the Middle District of Florida in Tampa where he was promoted to administrative supervisor, overseeing the day-to-day operations of this division in one of the largest districts in the country. Barry also served as a subject matter expert on the American Bail System representing Yale Law School and New York Law School between 2005 and 2014 traveling to China several times educating legal scholars, police, and political leaders as well as hosting them in the U.S. to experience our federal and local criminal justice systems. In 2000, Barry was selected as Chief Federal U.S. Probation Officer for Rhode Island where he served over fourteen years before his retirement in June 2014. Immediately upon retirement, Barry accepted an offer to serve as Associate Director of Community Corrections for the State of Rhode Island, responsible for the day-to-day operation of all community programs, including probation and parole. Shortly after commencing this new position, Barry was promoted to Assistant Director for Rehabilitative Services, responsible for the programming for inmates and individuals on community supervision in Rhode Island.

His compassion and humility were among his most endearing traits. Always willing to listen and offer advice, he will be missed. We wish him well in a retirement full of adventures with family and friends.

RIDOC Message:

This afternoon, at the RIDOC Administration Building, the RIBCO Executive Board held its annual memorial and wreath laying ceremony in memory of correctional officers who have died in the line of duty. RIBCO paid tribute to 5 officers in Rhode Island, 5 from Connecticut, 14 from Massachusetts, 9 from Vermont, and 2 from New Hampshire.
The RIBCO Honor Guard was joined by Honor Guards from the Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Vermont Departments of Corrections, as well as the Rhode Island State Police, Bristol County Sheriff’s Office, Rhode Island Sheriff’s Office, Providence Police Department, Cranston Police Department, Cranston Fire Department, and the Rhode Island Juvenile Correctional Services. In 2025, five correctional officers across the country died in the line of duty.
This week, we honor the dedication, resilience, and professionalism of correctional officers across the country. Your work often goes unseen, but its impact is felt every day—inside facilities and throughout our communities.

Thank you for your service.

A message from our Director:

As we recognize National Correctional Officers and Employees Week 2026 (May 3-9) and observe National Teacher Appreciation Week and National Nurses Week (May 6-12), I want to extend my deepest gratitude and respect to all of our staff and to our partners in these vital professions.

Our work in corrections is both demanding and essential. It calls for professionalism, resilience, sound judgment, and an unwavering commitment to safety and integrity. Each day, these professionals help maintain order, support rehabilitation, and contribute to the broader mission of public safety—often in challenging and high-pressure environments. That level of dedication does not go unnoticed.

At the same time, this week also highlights the important contributions of teachers and nurses—professionals who serve others with skill, compassion, and commitment. Together, these roles represent the foundation of safe, healthy, and strong communities and facilities.

What stands out most is the shared sense of purpose across these professions. Whether working on the front lines or supporting operations behind the scenes, your efforts make a meaningful difference every day. The strength of our institution—and our communities—is built on your dedication, consistency, teamwork, and integrity.

While this week provides an opportunity for recognition, your contributions deserve acknowledgment all year long. Thank you for the pride you take in your work and for the respect you show one another. Please accept my sincere appreciation for everything you do.

Respectfully,
Wayne
