***CATALYTIC CONVERTER THEFT***

Notice something missing in the picture? If you don't know, there is supposed to be a catalytic converter under this vehicle, but it has been stolen. Because of this, I wanted to take a minute to let you all know that this has not only been happening here in Waco, but all across the State of Texas. Catalytic Converter Thefts are the current fab in the dark theft world and the cases are growing by the day.

Many have asked why, which I could tell you, but the short answer is because it's easy for a thief to take them. So how are they doing it when it's attached and in many cases, welded to the vehicle? Well, they simply crawl under your vehicle and cut them off of your car. Right now, detectives here at the Waco Police Department are working on more than 100 active cases where this has happened to both businesses and individuals with numerous suspects.

The real question though is how do I keep this from happening to me? The following are some tips to help keep you from becoming a victim of this type of theft:

- Park in well lit areas.
- If possible, park your vehicle near security cameras or close to the front of a store.
- Install motion-sensing lights in your driveway.
- Install either a protective plate that covers your catalytic converter or a protection device to keep these thieves from making you their next victim.
- Etch your vehicle's VIN number or license plate number on your catalytic converter, so if it is stolen, it can be identified as yours and returned back to you. This also helps us track them back to the crime and makes it easier to identify the thieves.

If you are a victim of this, please report it to the Waco Police Department or your local police department so we can properly document the crime. Thank you all and let's have a wonderful afternoon.
