As we celebrate Independence Day, July 4th, with gatherings of friends and family, good food, and, of course, fireworks, let us remember that our freedom comes from great sacrifice. From the courageous signers of the Declaration of Independence to the brave military service members who have defended us since 1776, let us give thanks to them as we celebrate. Happy 4th!

This Memorial Day, and always, let us remember and honor the sacrifice those valiant men and women in uniform gave for our country and the freedoms we cherish. In the words of Joseph Rodman Drake, "And they who for their country die shall fill an honored grave, for glory lights the soldier's tomb, and beauty weeps the brave."

This month, Assemblyman Dancer introduced A3918, which allows N.J. income tax return filers to voluntarily contribute a portion of their return to help fund the burial of indigent veterans. "All those who served our country and made the ultimate sacrifice deserve to be laid to rest with honor, especially those individuals whose economic circumstances prevented a proper burial," said Dancer.

For those of you who are visiting my page because Governor Murphy tagged me in a post about a self-defense bill I sponsor, I must inform you that the governor’s description of my bill is … wrong. Far from allowing “anyone” to carry a concealed handgun, my bill (1) does not at all repeal or change the 36 existing disqualifications for doing so, including failure to pass a criminal background check and a mental health records check; and (2) adds two new requirements: 16 hours of comprehensive classroom instruction including firearm safety and self-defense laws, and two hours of target training by a certified instructor. Anyone who wants to read the bill can see it here: https://pub.njleg.state.nj.us/Bills/2022/A4000/3653_I1.PDF. In these times of controversy, we should all be careful to stick to facts and truth.

Today is Armed Forces Day, one in which we honor the men and women who have served and are serving the United States in uniform. Armed Forces Day was first proclaimed in 1950 by President Truman, celebrating all branches of the armed forces after the unification under one executive authority by the National Security Act.

The brutal invasion of Ukraine and the refugee crisis it has spawned has many of us looking for ways to help. One of our own Ocean County residents, Paul Kanitra, has gone above and beyond by traveling to Poland to assist refugees. Paul is motivated not only by ties to the region, but also a record of human rights work.

Read his story here: https://patch.com/new-jersey/pointpleasant/point-beach-mayor-heads-poland-help-ukrainian-refugees; https://video.foxnews.com/v/6299638662001 =show-clips

Family ties and a burgeoning refugee crisis pushed him to act: "I want to try to find the needs that are not being met," Paul Kanitra said.

Kudos to the tens of thousands of women, men and young people who participated in today’s 49th annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. in 19 degree weather, and those who marked the day around the country. They are truly the voice of the innocent voiceless.

I am proud to be among the 41% of the State Assembly who refused to support the radical new law protecting late-term, partial-birth, and nearly all other abortions. I will shortly sponsor legislation to repeal this terrible law, and will work with colleagues to gather support in that effort.

In the words of Alveda King, niece of the great civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King whom we celebrate this month, we must “work together for life and human dignity from the womb to the tomb.”

Today we remember the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr. May we continue to live up to the example of his leadership, determination, and words.

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
