Community Preparedness in Action!
Del Norte County Office of Emergency Services had a great time working alongside the Del Norte Amateur Radio Club (DNARC) at the Del Norte County Public Health Fair! Together, we shared the importance of emergency communications and helped our community learn more about being prepared when disaster strikes.

DEL NORTE COUNTY — ARE YOU READY FOR THE CHALLENGE?

The Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill is coming up on October 15, 2026, at 10:15 AM, and we want to see Del Norte County show up BIG!

🏆 Let’s make it a friendly challenge: Can Del Norte County have one of the strongest Great ShakeOut turnouts in Northern California?

We’re encouraging everyone to register and participate:

🏢 Local businesses
🏥 Medical & dental offices
🏫 Schools & childcare providers
🏨 Hotels, restaurants & tourism businesses
🏛️ Government agencies & organizations
🏠 Individuals & families
🤝 Community groups & nonprofits

At 10:15 AM on 10/15, take a few minutes to practice:

DROP. COVER. HOLD ON.

Earthquakes don’t give us a warning before they happen. Practicing now helps make those actions automatic when every second counts.

Del Norte County knows how to come together. Let’s show the rest of Northern California just how seriously our community takes preparedness and resilience!

Register your business, organization, office, family, or yourself for the 2026 Great ShakeOut! To register visit The Great ShakeOut or click the link below https://www.shakeout.org/register

Then share this post and challenge another Del Norte County business or organization to sign up too!

Let’s see those registration numbers climb, Del Norte!

Have you spotted something new around Del Norte County? 👀

Our new Tsunami Information Kiosks are beginning to make their way into the community!

These kiosks are designed to make tsunami preparedness information easy to find when you need it. Each kiosk features a site-specific evacuation map, including a “You Are Here” location and evacuation route guidance to help residents and visitors understand where to go if a tsunami threatens our coast.

📍 Know where you are.
➡️ Know your route.

This project has been a collaborative effort between Del Norte County OES, Cal OES, and the City of Crescent City, to help make tsunami preparedness information more visible and accessible throughout our coastal communities.

Keep an eye out—you may see one near you soon!

FIELDWORK AT LAST CHANCE GRADE: Crews will begin grading temporary access roads on Wednesday, Sept. 23, as part of geotechnical investigations for the Last Chance Grade Permanent Restoration Project. Drilling is expected to begin the week of Oct. 5, with fieldwork continuing through January.

This is investigation work, not tunnel construction. Crews will be drilling and testing below the ground, surveying and doing other fieldwork to gather information engineers need as design of the permanent solution continues.

Travelers on U.S. 101 may encounter traffic control or lane closures near active work areas. No trail or parking area closures are planned as part of this work, though the Damnation Creek Trailhead is closed through October due to a separate Caltrans project.

The map shows where work may be visible and heard along U.S. 101 and near the California Coastal Trail.

For our weekly report on possible delays in this area, visit tinyurl.com/d1roads.

Learn more about the project and sign up for updates at LastChanceGrade.com.

Gasquet Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Last night, our Gasquet Neighbors Helping Neighbors group held their monthly meeting and welcomed community members for a hands-on Stop the Bleed training.

A huge THANK YOU to our instructors, Peter Craig and Dennis Louy, for volunteering their time and sharing these potentially lifesaving skills with our community.

We are incredibly fortunate to have volunteers who truly care about helping their neighbors and making Del Norte County more prepared and resilient.

Thank you to everyone who came out, participated, and continues to make Gasquet a community where neighbors truly help neighbors.

25 YEARS. WE REMEMBER.

September 11, 2001, is a day forever etched into the heart of our nation.

Twenty-five years later, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives taken too soon. We remember the firefighters, law enforcement officers, paramedics, dispatchers, military members, and ordinary people who ran toward danger to help others. We remember the families who said goodbye that morning without knowing it would be the last time.

We also remember what followed.

In the midst of unimaginable tragedy, people reached for one another. Strangers became neighbors. Communities stood together. Countless acts of courage, compassion, and selflessness reminded us of the very best of humanity.

Today, the Del Norte County Office of Emergency Services pauses to honor every life lost, every family forever changed, every responder who served, and all those who continue to carry the impacts of that day.
