SCHEDULED DEL NORTE 199/197 CLOSURES PUSHED TO 2027: Full closures on U.S. 199 and Route 197 northeast of Crescent City have been pushed back again, this time to January of next year.

The initial work took longer than expected due to difficult drilling conditions, limited equipment availability, as well as safety and environmental considerations.

Once full closures begin, they are expected Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. most weeks. Weekday one-way traffic control related to the project has been ongoing. Follow us here and check the weekly report at tinyurl.com/d1roads for updates.

Scheduled weekday closures will be needed for worker and traveler safety during operations such as rock blasting and slope stabilization.

This project will not change permanent speed limits. However, speeds are reduced to 35 mph within work zones. Please pay attention to signage and give yourself enough stopping time as queues can come up quickly on this winding road.

This project is upgrading a few tight and narrow spots on the two highways so industry-standard size STAA trucks can get through, improving goods movement without causing a major increase in truck traffic. Wider lanes, wider shoulders, longer curve radii and better sight distance are designed to make the roadway safer for all travelers, including STAA trucks.

The targeted improvements, covering only 1.7 miles of roadway, also include bridge work, drainage improvements, pavement upgrades, guardrail installation and slope stabilization.

Read more about the project at tinyurl.com/dnstaa.

As students across Del Norte County head back to school, the CHP Crescent City Area reminds everyone to slow down and stay alert.

๐Ÿšธ Watch for students walking and riding bicycles to and from school.
๐Ÿšธ Obey all school zone speed limits and be prepared to stop for crossing guards and pedestrians.
๐Ÿšธ Give bicyclists plenty of space and avoid distractions behind the wheel.

๐ŸšŒ When a school bus displays flashing red lights and its stop arm is extended, California law requires drivers to stop and remain stopped until the lights stop flashing and students are safely clear of the roadway.

The first day of school is exciting for students, parents, and teachers. Letโ€™s all do our part to ensure every child arrives safely and returns home safely.
