(REMINDER) DEL NORTE 199/197 DELAYS BEGINNING MONDAY, FULL CLOSURES LATER THIS SUMMER: Travelers on U.S. 199 and Route 197 northeast of Crescent City should plan for delays beginning as soon as Monday, May 11.
The initial delays next week are expected along U.S. 199 near postmiles 20.2 and 23.2, with up to 10-minute holds at each location.
Delay times and work locations will also be listed in advance in the weekly Road Information Bulletin at tinyurl.com/d1roads, which is typically refreshed on Thursday afternoons.
Full closures are not expected to begin until late July or early August.
When full closures begin, they are expected to be scheduled Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with occasional pauses possible from week to week.
Full closures will be limited to specific spot locations shown on the project graphic, not the entire project corridor all at once.
Later this summer, for the most precise advance notice of which postmiles will be impacted by full closures each week, please check the weekly Road Information Bulletin at tinyurl.com/d1roads and continue following this page.
Once they begin, full closures will be necessary for the safety of workers and travelers during operations such as rock blasting and slope stabilization, and the closures will reduce the project timeline by approximately four years.
Night and weekend work will be minimal, and is only expected for signal operations and maintenance, as daylight is needed for safety due to the nature of the main construction work.
The 197/199 Safe STAA Access Highway Improvement Project will upgrade a few tight and narrow spots on Route 197 and U.S. 199 so industry-standard sized trucks can use the corridor, improving goods movement efficiency without causing a major jump in truck traffic or higher speed limits. Improvements like wider lanes, shoulders, curves, and better sight distance are intended to help all travelers. The targeted improvements, amending only 1.7 miles of roadway, also include bridge work, drainage improvements, pavement upgrades, guardrail installation, and slope stabilization.
