Yesterday, Crescent City Fire and Rescue responded to the 100 block of Elk Valley Rd for a report of smoke in the area. Engine 5112 arrived on scene to find an approximate 1/4-acre brush fire burning in light to medium brush. Fire crews deployed a progressive hose lay and began fire attack. The fire was controlled and contained within 30 minutes, and mop-up began. Crescent City Fire and Rescue was assisted by Cal Fire.

Fire Crews Respond to Structure Fire on US Highway 101, Two Occupants Transported to Hospital
On the evening of July 5th, 2026, Crescent City Fire and Rescue responded to a reported residential structure fire at 1093 US Highway 101, Space #10. Crews arrived to find the residence with significant fire involvement and an active threat to a neighboring structure.
Firefighters immediately began an offensive interior attack while simultaneously conducting search operations to ensure no occupants remained inside. Crews from CAL FIRE and Pelican Bay Fire Department responded as mutual aid partners and played a critical role in bringing the fire under control.
Two occupants had safely escaped the residence prior to fire crews' arrival and were transported to Sutter Coast Hospital for treatment.
Firefighters worked to contain the fire and protect nearby exposures, achieving control of the fire. Crews remained on scene to complete extinguishment, salvage, and overhaul operations before clearing the incident.
Sadly, one family pet did not survive the fire despite resuscitation efforts by responding personnel. A second pet was safely recovered and is currently in the care of a neighbor. Firefighters and community members searched extensively for a third pet believed to be inside or near the residence at the time of the fire; that animal has not yet been located.
The cause of the fire has been determined to be accidental, originating from unattended cooking materials on the stove.
Crescent City Fire and Rescue extend its concern to the affected residents and reminds the community of the importance of never leaving cooking unattended, even briefly. Unattended cooking remains one of the leading causes of residential fires nationwide.
Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the missing pet is encouraged to contact the Del Norte County Sheriffs Office Animal Control.
Crescent City Fire and Rescue thanks CAL FIRE, Pelican Bay Fire Department, Del Norte County Sheriff's Office, Crescent City Police Department, Del Norte Ambulance and Pacific Power for their assistance and mutual aid support during this incident.

After 24 years of dedicated service, Fire Captain Jerry Cardenas is hanging up his gear and retiring from the volunteer fire service.

For more than two decades, Jerry answered the call whenever his community needed him. Through emergencies, trainings, public events, and countless hours of service, he demonstrated unwavering commitment, professionalism, and a true passion for helping others.

Volunteer firefighters are the backbone of many departments, and Jerry's contributions have helped shape Crescent City Fire & Rescue into the organization it is today. His leadership, experience, mentorship, and dedication have left a lasting impact on our members and the community we proudly serve.

On behalf of the members of Crescent City Fire & Rescue, we extend our sincere gratitude for 24 years of selfless service. Thank you for your sacrifices, your commitment, and the example you have set for future generations of firefighters.

Please join us in congratulating Fire Captain Jerry Cardenas on his well-earned retirement and thanking him for his years of service to our community.

Today your Crescent City Fire and Rescue, participated in the annual egg drop at Uncharted Shores Academy. This is where the students build a container to house an egg that would survive a 50 foot drop from our ladder truck. Most of the eggs survived, with only a few casualties.
