VOTING FOR BOE 101 (2023 Edition)
Many people have been reaching out for a clearer understanding of how our BOE elections work and how to cast votes. Here are unbiased instructions and answers to some FAQ’s, based on this year’s ballot (pictured):
-There are always 9 total Trustees sitting on the Cresskill BOE who are elected for 3-year terms, 3 seats per year.
-This year 2 of the sitting trustees who are up for reelection are retiring from the board, giving us one Full 3-year term incumbent in the race, Amy Cusick.
- There are 3 seats available for the Full 3-year term, with 4 candidates running for these seats (S. Barrs, A. Moscu, A. Cusick, H. Martin.)
-Only 3 of the 4 candidates who are running for Full term seats can win. The 3 candidates with the most votes in the Full term section of the ballot will be Board of Education Trustees for the next three years. The Full-term candidate with the least number of votes will not get a seat.
-Voters can only vote for a maximum of 3 candidates in the Full 3-year Term section of the ballot but do not have to select 3. You can even select only one or two or even none, if you wish.
-This year there is a 4th seat, for an Unexpired 2-year term, because Daniel Nemet-Nejat was appointed by the board after one of the trustees resigned. In such cases, the appointed incumbent must run for election for the remainder of his 3-year term. He is running unopposed.
-Voters can only cast votes for Daniel Nemet-Nejat or no one in the Unexpired 2-year term section of the ballot.
-Each voter cannot select any candidate more than once in an election.
-Voters must be US Citizens and registered to vote in Cresskill to vote for Cresskill BOE.
-Your District No. and your poll location (where you go to vote) is on the front of your Sample Ballot mailer, Lower Left.
-You do not have to be a registered voter to show your support for candidates and to encourage registered friends and neighbors to go out and vote.
