The Borough of Cresskill’s first career fire chief has retired today after more than 30 years of dedicated service to the fire profession.
Chief Ulshoefer began his journey as a volunteer firefighter for the Borough of Cresskill, later turning his passion into a lifelong career. He went on to serve for more than a decade as a career firefighter with the Englewood Fire Department before being selected to lead the Cresskill Fire Department.
On March 1, 2012, Chief Ulshoefer was sworn in as Cresskill’s first career fire chief alongside the borough’s first three career firefighters. From the outset, he played a pivotal role in building the foundation of the borough’s combination fire department, establishing operational standards, enhancing training programs, and fostering a culture of professionalism, accountability, and service that will benefit the community for generations to come.
Chief Ulshoefer’s leadership extended well beyond the Borough. Throughout his distinguished career, he served on the New Jersey Fire Terrorism Task Force, was an advisory board member of the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety – Health and Safety Advisory Council, served on the New Jersey Statewide Utility Safety Team, and completed a two-year term as President of the Bergen County Fire Chiefs Association. He also chaired the Borough of Cresskill’s COVID-19 Task Force, guiding the community through one of the most challenging public health emergencies in recent history with steady leadership, coordination, and a commitment to resident safety.
These appointments reflected the respect he earned statewide as a trusted leader and subject-matter expert in fire service operations, emergency management, and public safety. In addition to his fire service leadership, Chief Ulshoefer served as the Borough of Cresskill’s Office of Emergency Management Coordinator. In this role, he successfully secured tens of thousands of dollars in disaster recovery funding.
He also ensured that the Borough maintained the only licensed paid emergency medical service in the Northern Valley. This allowed for rapid EMS response to Cresskill residents while also providing immediate ambulance service to neighboring communities. Under his leadership, the fire department consistently delivered high-quality emergency services while demonstrating strong fiscal responsibility. In 2025, the department responded to 1,665 calls for service and, through multiple revenue streams, offset operational costs, minimizing the financial impact on taxpayers while maintaining exceptional service levels.
Chief Ulshoefer leaves behind a lasting legacy of service, leadership, and dedication. The department he helped build, the personnel he mentored, and the standards he established have positioned the Cresskill Fire Department for continued success well into the future. Christopher Ulsh
