Park grounds, preserves and natural areas are open sun-up to sun-down daily for your outdoor recreation enjoyment. The Crawford Park District was created on November 16, 1994 by Probate Judge Steven Eckstein following a public hearing. This followed two years of research and meetings by a volunteer committee organized by Richard Carpenter to form a park district. The

District is governed by three volunteer Park Commissioners appointed by the Probate Judge. In addition, the Commissioners have appointed volunteers to serve on an Advisory Board to help guide the District. Primary goals of the Crawford Park District are to preserve nature for its enjoyment now and in the future and to educate citizens about the wonders of the natural world. In 1998, the non-profit group, The Friends of the Crawford Park District, was organized to help fund projects and to support the mission of the Park District. Due to many grantor requirements, it was the Friends of the Crawford Park District who oversaw the funding and construction of the Lowe-Volk Park Nature Center. Current sites in the Crawford Park District include Unger Park, Lowe-Volk Park, Sears Woods State Nature Preserve, Heckert Nature Preserve, Daughmer Prairie Savannah State Nature Preserve, and Sandusky Wildlife Area. In addition, the Colonel Crawford Bikeway, which begins at Lowe-Volk Park, was set up to guide bikers over township and county roads. The Nature Center offers nature and history programs for families and environmental education programs to area schools and other community organizations. Our Nature Center is open year-round and features interpretive nature and local history exhibits, live animals, bird feeders, and butterfly garden observation room. There is also an active bee hive, children’s learning center, nature gift shop, and a six-foot diameter stained glass windows, all constructed in an environmentally friendly manner. A quarterly newsletter is sent to over 1,000 supporters. Newsletters contain informational nature articles, news about Park District concerns, and most importantly, the newsletter details all scheduled public programs.

Bringing your recycling in to Lowe-Volk Park? Save your clean cardboard tubes (toilet paper and paper towels) and 15 oz. tin cans (not pop/beer cans) and bring them to this box on the front porch of the Nature Center. We will repurpose them into craft supplies for our upcoming Nature Camp activities!

The Friends of the Crawford Park District are proud to continue the legacy of the Dr. Laurie Anne Rhodebeck Memorial Scholarship, which honors a deep commitment to education, the environment, and community impact.

This year, we are thrilled to recognize two outstanding recipients—a testament to the strength and passion of the students in our community. Selecting just two was no easy task, as we received many great applications.

We extend our congratulations to our recipients Brooklyn Penwell, a 2026 Galion High School graduate and Logan Hanes, a 2023 Buckeye Central High School graduate who will be entering his fourth year at The Ohio State University. 👏😁

Many of our spring wildflowers are starting to fade, but there are still plenty of fascinating things to discover in the woods at the many Crawford Park District properties!

Keep your eyes on the forest floor for the strange and unusual American cancer-root (Conopholis americana) — a plant that looks more like a tiny pinecone popping out of the ground than a wildflower. This odd woodland species has no chlorophyll, meaning it can’t make its own food like most plants. Instead, it survives by attaching to oak tree roots underground!

Nature always has surprises waiting along the trail, so enjoy a hike and see what fun discoveries you can find this spring.

Invasive Plant Alert: Garlic Mustard

A non‑native invasive plant spreading through our park woodlands—and visitors can help stop it.

How to Identify
First year: Low green rosettes with rounded, wrinkled leaves that stay green all winter
Second year: Tall (2–4 ft) stalks with small white, 4‑petaled flowers in spring
Crushed leaves smell like garlic

Why It’s Invasive
It out competes native plant habitat, it thrives in shade and forms dense colonies, the roots release chemicals that suppress nearby plants and it produces 100+ seeds per plant and seeds can lie dormant in soil for 5+ years.

How It Spreads
Seeds stick to boots, pets, bikes, vehicles allowing it to travel along trails and streambanks.

How You Can Help
Only pull when you are certain of the ID, pull flowering plants before seeds form
by removing as much of the root as possible.
Do NOT leave pulled plants on the ground because the plants can set roots when it is wet were dropped and it will keep flowering and seeds can still ripen!
Bag and remove pulled plants and dispose of in the trash.
