Iowa Readers Make Leaders - Save the Children Action Network

READERS MAKE LEADERS
Save the Children Action Network in Iowa is hosting a special online reading event with local Iowa authors, Saturday, June 20. Kids, parents, and other family members are invited to join Iowa children's authors, Charlotte Gunnufson and Dorothia Rohner for a naptime tale!

The United States is facing a literacy crisis. Right now, 63% of fourth-graders are reading below grade level. As many of you work in child care and education programs, you are well aware that many had to temporarily close due to COVID-19, and many are faced with the real fear that they may not be able to open again when the virus subsides. If fewer children are able to access quality child care, our nation's low literacy rates are likely to decline even more.

To celebrate the importance of reading and encourage candidates during this election year to address the need to rebuild our nation's child care infrastructure, Save the Children is hosting Readers Make Leaders events online.

Charltte Gunufson is the author of Prince and Pirate (Putnam/Penguin) and Halloween Hustle (Two Lions) as well as many poems which have appeared in Highlights.

Dorothia Rohner is the author of I Am Goose! Dorothia is an award-winning illustrator with a background in scientific illustration, nature painting, and graphic design.

This week is Infant Mental Health Week.

The theme is 20:20 vision, seeing the world through babies' eyes.

Why is Infant Mental Health Important?

Infant mental health describes the social and emotional wellbeing and developmental of children in the earliest years of life.

Because the first 1001 days are a period of rapid development, early experiences affect not only babies' emotional wellbeing now, but also influence babies how their bodies and brains develop.

Sensitive, trusted and responsive relationships are fundamental to infant mental health.

CNN and 'Sesame Street' to host a town hall addressing racism

Do your children have questions about the ongoing nationwide protests and racism? Parents, do you have questions about talking to your kids about these issues and embracing diversity? Leave them below and they may be used in a special event airing Saturday at 10 a.m. ET: "Coming Together: Standing Up to Racism. A CNN/Sesame Street Town Hall for Kids and Families"

As anger and heartbreak have swept across America over the killing of yet another black man at the hands of police, CNN and Sesame Street are refocusing their second town hall to address racism.

I’m hanging this in our break room. Each teacher has a clip with their name on it. I will move it up and down based on how good I determine they are being.⁣

I think it will be totally effective and everyone will love coming to work.⁣

They will act just how I want them to act. And they won’t move when I don’t want them to move. And they will sit nicely. And pay attention. And never talk to their coworkers. ⁣

And maybe, if everyone can get on the top one, we will all get to hang out together at the end of the day and enjoy some pizza together. Because we built this amazing team and everyone is so happy to be at the top.⁣

Wouldn’t you want to work here?⁣

If you are still reading. This is NEVER something I would do to adults. This would be insane! Can you even imagine if this was actually a thing in the teacher’s break room? Can you imagine your name on the clip? Can you imagine your boss or principal telling everyone in the class why you were moved down the chart? Or, have no idea what you did to get your name moved down.⁣

That would be a pretty rotten work environment. ⁣

Let’s not give our children rotten classroom environments. And if you are a parent and see one of these in your child’s classroom, ask to have your child’s name taken off the chart. And then go hang one up in the break room and see how the adults like it. 😜

“It’s become clear that as a nation, we’ve abandoned our caregivers.”

Dr. Dana Suskind, Co-Director of the TMW Center for Early Learning + Public Health, explains in an op-ed for the Chicago Tribune, why NOW is the perfect time to rethink how we support those who take care for our most valuable resource - our children. She believes this pandemic has demonstrated the growing need for universal child care.
