All of the summer camps will be offered online this summer through videos presented by Adair County Extension & Outreach staff, as well as Youth Council. The videos will be on different topics like cooking, art, photography, livestock, healthy living, and other topics that are a part of 4-H. We hope everyone enjoys and takes part in this new experience with us.

This is the first video of out Summer Camp series, and it is on how to train your dog to sit! In this video, we will learn the basics of training dogs. You can take this knowledge and use it for various other tricks to teach your dog, but today we're focusing on Sitting!

Here's some tips to help with the training!
1. If you're worried about your dog accidentally nipping at your fingers for treats, instead of giving them the treats directly, place the trat on the floor in front of them to reward them.
2. You want to train only one dog at a time. This is so we can make sure no dogs get jealous of the other won getting food, and we can focus on one dog at a time to make sure they all get their share!
3. Try to train your dogs in short bursts. Maybe 10-20 minuted a day for one week compared to two hours in one day. Dog's brains get tired easily, and when they do get tired, it can be hard to keep their focus on you, and what you're trying to teach them.

BIO:

Born and raised in the Midwest, I have lived in the Creston area for the majority of my life. I currently live just outside of Creston with my husband, which we have recently become empty nesters. Our oldest daughter just graduated from NWMS with a degree in sports media and the youngest graduated from SWCC with her AA and is headed on to LSU in the fall to enter into the law program.

I have a great passion for nutrition and exercise and have even built a home gym in our garage where I train clients. If I am not exercising, working in my garden, enjoying the great outdoors, or meal prepping, you will find me working my way through a novel or working on some type of craft or project.

I am very excited to take on this role and put my education and passion in nutrition to great use!

Who's Your Iowa Farmer?
04/15/2020

Who's Your Iowa Farmer?

ISU Extension has cancelled all face-to-face meetings and field days as part of concerted efforts to end the spread of COVID-19. Nevertheless, staff remain dedicated to serving their clientele. Rebecca Vittetoe, a field agronomist for 10 counties in East Central Iowa, is busy answering questions via email and by phone. “I’ve had a lot of spring forage management questions as well as questions related to gearing up for the 2020 planting season.”

For the past five years Rebecca has worked to provide research-based information to help people make informed decisions. She says the most rewarding part of her job is building relationships with people. “Whether it’s the farmers, landowners, retailer or my co-workers, I find the people that I get to work with on a day-to-day basis help to make my job rewarding! You never know what question you may be asked, but I love those interactions.”

Rebecca finds herself missing those in person interactions with the current work from home restrictions. “Right now, we (ISU Extension staff) are all just being flexible and taking one day at a time. I really miss the in-person interaction, but thankful to still be a resource!” Once planting is finished, she is typically asked to visually appraise problems within a field or present at field days, as pictured below. Although handling this spring's calls remotely will provide challenges, with today’s technology, clients can snap pictures and chat live with their ISU field agronomist. “If we aren’t allowed to have anyone in the field with us, we will work around that to still serve Iowans to the best of our abilities!!!”

From the time she was a child on a family farm outside of LeMars, Rebecca was planning a future in ‘the field.’ “Growing up on my family’s Century Farm fueled my passion for agriculture and agronomy. I knew I might not be the one going back to my family’s farm, but I wanted to carry on that tradition. I was initially very interested in plant breeding and attended Iowa State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences to major in agronomy with an emphasis in plant breeding. However, I quickly realized I liked all aspects of agronomy and didn’t want to focus on just one! I also have always had a huge interest and passion in education and outreach.”

Experiences gained as a Plymouth County 4-H’er have proved to be valuable assets for the specialist. Rebecca credits 4-H for helping her develop public speaking skills, leadership, organization, record keeping, relationships, and networking skills, all of which she utilizes in her current vocation. She notes a natural progression to her classwork, internships, and involvement in clubs at ISU with forming the foundation of her career.

And as a BONUS, the CALS graduate just happened to meet her husband, Jordan, in a soils class at Iowa State. The couple along with their young son call Washington home and are engaged in farming with Jordan’s family. Rebecca says she enjoys baking and sewing as well as outdoor time to work in her own garden. She confesses she and her husband enjoy spending summer nights crop scouting, just for fun.

A big shout out to Rebecca and her fellow Extension staff, for finding creative ways to continue serving and supporting clients. Despite a pandemic and the challenges of social distancing, those in agriculture persevere and sustain us all. If you have a chance, please let them know how much you appreciate their efforts during ISU Extension and Outreach Week. #youriowafarmer (Photo credit: Erika Lundy)
