On Tuesday, May 26, 2026, the Creston Fire Department conducted a live training burn at 435 Wyoming. The home was identified as a nuisance property and was scheduled for demolition, providing firefighters with valuable real-world training.

Exposure protection was a primary concern, so we implemented measures to keep nearby structures cool due to the intense heat.

Additionally, a live training burn offers the opportunity to experience on-scene communication, including passing on arrival and size-up reports from the initial responding officer and other truck team leaders.

Equipment was staged to maximize efficiency, with attention to hydrant locations and hose placement to minimize friction loss and maintain optimal water pressure at the nozzle.

The combination of an older structure and a newer addition allowed firefighters to observe fire behavior in an older, balloon-wall-framed building, where continuous wall cavities can accelerate vertical fire spread. In contrast, the newer section took longer to ignite, highlighting the effectiveness of modern fire-blocking materials in slowing fire progression.

We appreciate Keith Brown, Assistant Chief of the Afton Volunteer Fire Department, for serving as our Safety Officer during the training.

Along with setting up the U.S. Flag at Graceland Cemetery for Memorial Day Weekend, firefighters also placed medallions and flags on the graves of men who served the Creston Fire Department for at least 15 years and are now buried in Graceland or Calvary Cemeteries. One of those men was John McCaffrey, a former Chief who retired in December 1883, just 12 years after Creston became a city. (Not all graves are pictured)
