Today, we recognize Correctional Officer Tristan Randol.

Tristan joined the Union County Sheriff’s Office a couple months ago while also attending Southwestern Community College as full time student, majoring in Criminal Justice.

Balancing a full-time college schedule while working full time in corrections takes commitment, discipline, and a strong work ethic, qualities Tristan has already demonstrated during his time with our office.

When asked what he enjoys about working as a Correctional Officer, Tristan said: “I enjoy the job because it’s never boring and every day is something different.”

He also shared what stands out most about the Sheriff’s Office:“The way we’re all so close and supportive at the Sheriff’s Office makes it feel like a family, not just a job.”

That teamwork and support are an important part of our culture, and we are excited to watch Tristan continue to grow both professionally and personally as he works toward a career in law enforcement.

Today, we recognize Correctional Officer Austin Eblen.

Austin will reach 4 years of service with the Union County Sheriff’s Office this June. During that time, he has become a dependable member of our team and someone who takes pride in both the profession and the people he works alongside.

When asked about the job, Austin shared that after several years in corrections, he can’t imagine himself doing anything else. Before joining the Sheriff’s Office, he spent years working on farms and in factories, where he learned the value of hard work and working with people from all walks of life.

Austin described corrections as a profession unlike any other: “It’s just a totally different line of work than almost any other job you can have. It’s indescribably different.”

Now, after gaining experience and earning the trust to help train new officers, Austin says one of the most rewarding parts of the job is watching new employees begin their own journey in corrections.

We appreciate Austin’s dedication, leadership, and commitment to the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

Please join us in thanking Austin for the work he does every day.

Correctional Officer Appreciation Week

This week, we recognize the men and women who serve behind the walls. Often out of the spotlight but who play a critical role in public safety and the daily operation of our Sheriff’s Office.

Today, we want to highlight Jail Administrator Josh Christensen.

Josh has dedicated 22 years to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, serving as a Correctional Officer and now leading our jail operations. Over those two decades, he has seen it all, and through it all, he has remained steady, professional, and committed to the job.

Josh has shared what he enjoys most about his work is the variety that each day brings. Anyone who has worked in a jail knows that no two days are the same and that takes adaptability, patience, and strong leadership. Josh exemplifies those qualities.

More importantly, Josh makes a difference. His impact is felt not only within our team, but also in the lives of those in our custody. The way our correctional staff carry themselves matters, and Josh sets that standard.

We are grateful for his service, his leadership, and the example he sets every day.

Please join us in our recognition of our correctional officers this week!

Last Friday, Deputy Jacob Pacholski graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy after successfully completing the 16-week academy at Camp Dodge and earning his certification as a law enforcement officer.

Jacob was hired by the Union County Sheriff’s Office in June and has since completed his field training process with Sgt. Hightshoe. We are excited to have him back serving Union County and confident he will be a strong addition to our team.

The academy demands discipline, perseverance, teamwork, and a commitment to service, qualities Jacob has continued to demonstrate throughout his training. We are proud of the effort he has put in and look forward to watching him continue to grow both professionally and personally in service to our community.

We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to the staff, instructors, and volunteers at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy for the tremendous amount of time, knowledge, and effort they invest into these recruits. The impact they have on shaping the future of law enforcement across Iowa does not go unnoticed. (Training photos courtesy of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy.)

Please join us in congratulating Deputy Pacholski on this accomplishment and welcoming him back home to Union County.
