Iowa Insurance Division’s Fraud Bureau will be traveling around Union County tomorrow to answer any questions about possible scams involving severe weather cleanup.

Contact your insurance company directly: Your first call should always be to your insurance agent to report the damage.
Document the damage: Take photos and videos of your property before doing any temporary repairs or debris removal.

BEWARE OF STORM CHASERS & SCAMS
Unfortunately, bad actors try to take advantage of communities during times of need. Protect your home and your wallet by looking out for these red flags:
Contractor Fraud: Be wary of unsolicited contractors knocking on your door. NEVER pay large sums of money up front, and don't let them pressure you into signing a contract on the spot. Always get multiple written estimates and verify their registration with the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, & Licensing.
Unauthorized "Public Adjusters": A roofing or repair contractor cannot legally negotiate your insurance claim, appraise the damage for the insurance company, or promise to waive your deductible. Only deal directly with your insurance company or a licensed public adjuster.
Report Suspected Fraud:
If you feel you are being pressured by a "storm chaser," suspect contractor fraud, or think someone is illegally acting as an unlicensed public adjuster, we want to know about it!

Due to the recent weather impact in Union County resident's severely affected by the storm are eligible to apply for the Individual Disaster Assistance Programs. There is the Disaster Case Advocacy and the Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program. They can be reach at the following: homelandsecurity.iowa.gov/assistance

There are income threshold criteria that must be met to qualify for the Individual Assistance Grant Program. This information is available on the website.

The IIAGP and DCA programs are activated when the Governor issues a disaster proclamation turning on IIAGP and DCA for the affected counties.

Union County is in a Tornado Watch until 9PM this evening. The primary threats include... a few tornadoes, scattered damaging winds and isolated significant gusts to 75 mph likely, scattered large hail and isolated very large hail events to 3 inches in diameter likely.

It will be hot and humid today and much of the day will be dry. There is a conditional risk for severe storms late this afternoon into evening. If a storm can develop, it could be strong to severe with strong winds and hail, but storms may have a difficult time developing. Then, more storms may be entering the region late tonight into the overnight but how much of Iowa will be impacted by these storms remains uncertain. Stay weather aware tonight and have multiple ways to receive warnings, even if sleeping! There are more chances for severe weather on Wednesday and Thursday.

FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING.

*WHAT...Southwest into portions of Central Iowa
*WHEN... From this afternoon through Friday morning
*Impacts... Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

*ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- Storms are expected to increase in coverage this afternoon into tonight and will be able to produce high rainfall rates in a short period of time as they repeat over the same areas. While soils have been dry recently, the hight rates may exceed the soil's ability to absorb the rainfall in the short period of time. Thi may lead to flash flooding. This may be especially true in portions of Adair, Greene and Taylor Counties which have received rainfall in the past few days. Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches with isolated higher amounts are expected by sunrise Friday.

A Flood Watch has been issued for portions of southern and central Iowa from late this afternoon through Friday morning. Rainfall totals of 2–4 inches are anticipated, with locally higher amounts possible, leading to a risk of scattered flash flooding and urban ponding. A second round of heavy rain and storms is expected late Friday. Motorists are reminded to never drive through flooded roadways. Turn Around, Don't Drown!
