Saturday Market Vendor Update

Since announcing the cancellation of the July 4 Saturday Market, we've been working to create additional opportunities for our Saturday Market vendors throughout the remainder of the season.

We're excited to share several updates:

The Town of Moffat has generously offered complimentary vendor space at two upcoming Friday markets for current Saturday Market vendors.

Both markets include live music, and vendors will enjoy complimentary Gosar sausages and side dishes throughout the day.

Current Saturday Market vendors will receive 50% off vendor registration for the Vortex Festival (August 8-9) by presenting their current Saturday Market permit.

We're also working with organizers regarding the September Energy Fair, which will overlap with the Saturday Market. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.

The Town also intends to schedule an additional Saturday Market later this season and is exploring an expanded Halloween Market Weekend.

This experience highlighted opportunities to improve how overlapping community events are managed, and the Town will be reviewing those policies before next season.

A heartfelt thank you to the Town of Moffat, the Vortex Festival organizers, our vendors, volunteers, and everyone who continues supporting local businesses throughout the San Luis Valley.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the many markets and community events still ahead this season.

The Town of Crestone would like to provide an update regarding this Saturday's market.

After careful consideration, the Town has made the decision to cancel the Saturday Market for Saturday, July 4, in order to accommodate the community-wide Fourth of July celebration.

We recognize this decision is disappointing for many of our Saturday Market vendors and customers, and we sincerely appreciate the important role our local vendors play in our community. This was not an easy decision, and we understand that not everyone will agree with the outcome.

To help offset the missed market day, the Town intends to schedule an additional Saturday Market later this season. We'll share those details as soon as they are finalized.

For vendors interested in participating in the Fourth of July celebration, please contact the event coordinator directly regarding vendor registration. The event currently offers a discounted vendor fee for vendors who complete 10 hours of community service.

Looking ahead, we'll be reviewing our policies and procedures for overlapping Town events and the Saturday Market so expectations are clear well in advance of future seasons. Our goal is to learn from this situation and establish a clearer process moving forward.

We encourage community members who wish to provide feedback on this matter to submit correspondence to the Board of Trustees or participate during Citizens' Comments at an upcoming Board meeting. Constructive public input is an important part of improving Town policies and processes.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued support of our local vendors and community events. We look forward to seeing everyone back at the Saturday Market soon.

Community Free Box Update

The Town of Crestone will not be renewing the current lease agreement related to the Community Free Box.

The structure itself is privately owned and was previously leased to the Town, which assisted with insurance and trash service during the term of the agreement. Following the recent transition in volunteer leadership, the Town evaluated the operational and staffing capacity required to continue involvement and determined that it is not sustainable for the Town to manage or coordinate the Free Box at this time.

The Town appreciates the time, care, and effort that community members and volunteers have contributed to this project over the years, as well as the many people who expressed interest in helping moving forward.

As the structure is privately owned, any future operation, coordination, relocation, or use of the Free Box will now be at the discretion of the owner.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the project and contributed to the spirit of community care behind it.

Operational Update from the Town of Crestone:

The Town of Crestone is currently operating under temporary modified and remote conditions due to mold and indoor air quality concerns identified within Town Hall, continued testing and remediation planning, office transitions, and broader operational restructuring efforts.

At this time, Town Hall is closed to walk-in services while the Town evaluates remediation needs, operational continuity, and potential temporary or alternative office solutions.

While mold has been identified within the building and remediation planning is underway, Town Hall has not been condemned, and Town operations remain active and ongoing.

At this time, the Town’s primary focus is maintaining continuity of operations and public services while longer-term remediation and facility planning efforts continue.

Staff are currently working from multiple remote and temporary locations while new communication systems, workflows, and operational procedures are implemented. As a result, residents and applicants may experience delayed response times while staff work through a significant communications and administrative backlog across multiple departments.

Staff are actively responding to:

Emails
Phone calls
Applications
Billing matters
Licensing requests
Work orders
Ongoing operational projects

We are asking the public for patience and understanding while we continue stabilizing operations and transitioning into more sustainable remote and distributed systems.

At this time, we strongly encourage:

- Calling or emailing rather than attempting walk-in visits
- Scheduling appointments in advance whenever possible
- Utilizing virtual meetings and online systems when appropriate
- Allowing additional time for administrative processing and responses
