Crestwood Police Receive IDOT Traffic Grant Funding for LIDAR radar units.

Thanks to our partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation Traffic Safety, the Crestwood Police Department has been awarded a new Stalker Lidar Radar system.

As seen in the picture, Sergeant Duffy demonstrates the use of a brand-new LIDAR radar unit the police department obtained through a traffic safety grant. The radar unit offers the latest technology to our officers in enhancing roadway safety.

The goal of these programs is safety, compliance with traffic laws, and education for the traveling public. Our continued partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation and supported grants allows us to foster targeted traffic safety enforcement and education campaigns in an ongoing effort to keep our roads and the public safe.

🎉🚔 New Year's Eve Safety Tips 🚔🎉

As we prepare to ring in the New Year, we want to remind everyone to prioritize safety while celebrating. Here are some essential tips to ensure you and your loved ones make it home safely:
1. Plan Ahead: If you plan to drink, arrange for a designated driver, use public transportation, or call a rideshare service. Never drink and drive!
2. Stay Alert: Keep your phone charged and stay aware of your surroundings. Watch out for pedestrians and other vehicles on the road.
3. Avoid Distractions: Put your phone away while driving. Focus on the road and avoid distractions.
4. Use Seatbelts: Buckle up! Ensure everyone in your vehicle is wearing their seatbelt, no matter how short the drive.
5. Be Cautious: If you’re walking home, stay on well-lit paths, and avoid walking alone if possible. Trust your instincts—if something feels off, seek help.
6. Watch for Drunk Drivers: If you suspect someone is driving under the influence, report it immediately by calling 9-1-1.

Let’s work together to make this New Year’s Eve a safe and joyful celebration.

From all of us at the Crestwood Police Department, have a Happy New Year!

Ensuring Quick Access for Emergency Services

Fire hydrants are vital in fighting fires, providing the necessary water supply for firefighters. Snow accumulation can obstruct access to these hydrants, delaying response times during emergencies. In a situation where every second counts, a blocked hydrant can significantly hinder firefighting efforts, potentially leading to loss of property or even lives.

Snow Shoveling and the Risk of Heart Attack: Here's What You Need to know…

Chest pain while shoveling snow can be a sign of a heart attack, which is why you should stop immediately and seek emergency medical attention by calling 9-1-1.

Shoveling is strenuous exercise, made more dangerous by cold weather which can constrict arteries and increase blood pressure, making the activity very similar to a "peak exercise" stress test for your heart. If symptoms are severe or don't subside, call 9-1-1.

What to do
• Stop immediately: If you experience chest pain, pressure, tightness, or shortness of breath, stop shoveling right away.

• Call 9-1-1: If the symptoms don't go away after a few minutes, call 9-1-1 for emergency medical help.

Why shoveling snow can be dangerous:

• Strenuous activity: Shoveling snow is a demanding full-body workout that puts significant strain on your heart.

• Cold weather: Cold air can increase your blood pressure and constrict coronary arteries, making your heart work harder.

• Risk factors: People with pre-existing heart conditions, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or those who are sedentary, out of shape, or over 60 are at a higher risk.

How to shovel more safely:

• Warm up: Do a light warm-up, like walking, before you begin.

• Dress appropriately: Wear layers to stay warm and dry.

•Take frequent breaks: Don't try to clear all the snow at once. Pace yourself and take breaks often.

• Push, don't lift: Try to push the snow instead of lifting it whenever possible.
Lift with your legs: If you must lift, bend your knees and use your legs to lift, not your back.
Shovel in smaller scoops: Take smaller, lighter scoops of snow rather than large, heavy ones.

• Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water before, during, and after shoveling.

Consider alternatives: If you have risk factors, consider asking for help from a family member, neighbor, or a professional service.

Please help make the jobs of our officers and public works operators a little easier and stay off the streets.
