Crete Community Garden The Crete Community Garden is located on City of Crete (Nebraska) property south of the intersection of 10th and Thornwood Ave. Applications now available.

Crete residents can rent a garden plot for use from May to October with tools and water on site. Low Income Crete preschool students have an obesity rate of 23.6%, more than double the state average. Working with members of the community and Doane University, the community garden was started to combat the lack of inexpensive and local food.

Before the needed rains hit this weekend, Doane University Football volunteers took just over an hour on a pleasant Friday evening to clean up the community garden for the season. Players and coaches prepared garden plots using both hand tools and a tiller, raked brush and pulled weeds, cleaned out and organized the garden shed, picked up sticks and trash, and prepared other areas for future maintenance. Their hard work and willingness to help out each spring is appreciated in order to make the garden a great space for residents to utilize during the growing season.

Thanks goes out to city departments for help in loading up and disposing of weeds and branches, transporting the tiller (graciously on loan from Crete Ace), rounding up extra garden tools for the cleanup, and turning on the water hydrant.

Players and Coaches from the Doane University Football showed up in force on Tuesday evening and transformed the Crete Community Garden into a growing space ready for Spring. In about an hour, these volunteers completed pre-season preparations, including cleaning out brush and weeds, working the dirt in plots with rakes, running a tiller, trimming grass and weeds, picking up sticks, rebuilding compost bins, and cutting out unwanted growth from other corners of the garden. Thank you Tigers for helping start the garden season for Crete residents! Additional thanks to the Public Works Departments for use of wheelbarrows, transporting the tiller (graciously on loan from Crete ACE), and getting the garden water turned on for the season. Friends of the garden also loaned a few leaf rakes for the evening.

Rain, mud, and general soggy conditions didn't deter the Doane University Football team from a morning of service this weekend at the Crete Community Garden. They completed pre-season preparations, including working the dirt in plots, cleaning out brush and weeds, trimming grass, and picking up sticks and branches. Crete Family Literacy parents and children were participants in the Community Garden this summer. We planted, tended, and harvested produce while learning English vocabulary for gardening. We also helped plant pumpkins at the pumpkin patch for the Pumpkin Festival.
