It remains an unfortunate circumstance that frauds will occur or be attempted in disaster struck areas. We are no different. There have already been reports of fictitious inquires around our area.
Here are some tips to keep in mind:

-By ordinance, our village requires ALL solicitors to obtain daily permits. These permits must be displayed on their outer-most clothing, and they can only operate between 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. once receiving said permit.
There is a fee, background, and waiting period that all prospective solicitors must complete.
WE ENFORCE THIS ORDINANCE! Let that be clear to those who intend to solicit in our village due to the storm damage. You will get a ticket without a permit.
-"No Solicitor" or like signage is a legal advisement. Solicitors are required to pass these properties. Failure to observe this signage is a violation of local ordinance.

-General contractors are required to be registered with the village. To obtain this registration, contractors are required to record liability insurance with the village, among other requirements. A CONTRACTOR, PROPERLY REGISTERED WITH THE VILLAGE, WILL BE ABLE TO SHOW YOU THIS DOCUMENT.

-When it comes to contractors, do not be shy about asking for their license (applicable to certain trades), Bonding(A surety amount from an outside provider that backs their work), and Insurance (liability coverage in the event an accident or damage occurs). Any contractor or provider that advertises "Licensed, Ensured, and Bonded" should be able to show documentation upon request.

-BE VIGILANT! Don't be shy about asking for these validations. Be suspicious of heavy, up front payments before work is to start. Always prepare a contract that details scope of work, price, and estimated completion date. Ask for references, a good contractor will be happy to show their quality of work.

-To those who intend to operate outside of these ordinances and laws.

Our police department will respond to solicitor complaints, and citations will likely be issued. Contractors failing to register with the village may be cited, and/or referred the proper process in some circumstances.
In regards to Home Repair Fraud, Illinois criminal code does a great job of detailing the many felonies one can commit in victimizing an unsuspecting citizen. Our officers are accustom to pursuing all that apply.

Good information.

Following the recent storms, the Village of Crete has issued a local disaster declaration this is an official step that helps us respond faster, bring in extra help, and document storm impacts.

It can also help our community qualify for state or federal aid if it becomes available, it doesn’t change anything residents need to do day-to-day.

📸 Residents are encouraged to document damage and losses:
• Take photos of all damage
• Keep receipts for repairs and expenses
• Report damage through the Will County survey: willcountyema.org/storm

If you lost food due to a storm or extended power outage, check with your homeowners or renters insurance provider to see whether food loss is covered under your policy.

These fraudsters will be out looking for their next victim. Be alert! and call our non-emergency number 708-672-0911 if you are unsure about a provider's legitimacy.

🚨 Watch Out for Scams After a Disaster

Scammers often target communities after severe storms and disasters. Be cautious of anyone who pressures you to make an immediate decision, asks for payment upfront, or promises guaranteed assistance.

Before hiring a contractor:
✅ Ask for identification, references, and proof of insurance
✅ Get a written estimate and contract
✅ Avoid paying the full amount upfront
✅ Never share personal or banking information with an unknown caller
✅ Keep your insurance company in the loop

If something does not feel right, slow down and verify before you act. Report suspected scams to local law enforcement or the Illinois Attorney General’s Consumer Fraud Hotline at 1-800-386-5438.

📣Additionally, Crete Township Hall at 1367 Wood St. is up and running. Should you need to charge cell phones or other devices, they are open to assist.
Our lobby remains open for those who need charging as well.

Submitting the survey helps local officials understand the extent of the damage throughout the county. This survey is not an application for financial assistance and does not replace reporting damage to your insurance company.

We partnered again with Trinity Lutheran Church for another successful Crete Clean Up and Faith in Action Day.

Thank you to all the volunteers who came out for the annual spring cleaning around town.

Those in attendance were treated to a coffee and donut breakfast then a hamburger and hot dog lunch.

You may see or have seen black trash bags around the Village. Don’t be alarmed. These bags were placed by the volunteers and will soon be picked up by the Public Works Department.
