Early this morning we received the sad news that our former Fire Chief, Darrel Deckard had passed from this life. A couple of our members were actually headed down to visit him this morning when they got the call. A few others were planning a trip down this week to visit an old friend and leader who meant so much to many of us. Unfortunately they didn't get that chance. Darrel was instrumental in getting our department moving into what it eventually became. It was his insight and vision that helped us for over 3 decades to become who we are as a department some many years later. For many of us, he was the definition of a leader. He was the visual demonstration of what selfless sacrifice looked like. He was the stern voice of correction when we'd messed up. He was a wealth of knowledge. And he was a friend. We may not have gotten to see him a lot these past years after he moved closer to family, but the bond and respect for the man never lessened. He would always stop by to see us anytime he was around the area. We will miss those visits and miss our friend. Our prayers go out to his children, grandchildren and family during this time of grieving. May his love for you keep you strong during this time. Rest easy brother. We've got it from here. 🫡
