It's National Library Week!

And we're celebrating by sharing an update on libraries from the American Library Association - including the most challenged books of this year.

With a proud 🌈 reminder that Contra Costa County Libraries are home to the Deloach and Troy LGBTQ+ collection (woot woot El Cerrito Library!) and a robust African American collection, right down the street at Hercules Library. ❤

Attention, teen poets!

The Future Voices Poetry Prize is named for Amanda Gorman, the youngest Inaugural Poet in American history and a Beyond Baroque alumna. As a teenager, Amanda began her development as a poet as a participant in the Beyond Baroque Student Poets’ Program, and later credited Beyond Baroque as the place “where a young poet found the love of her life.”

The Future Voices Poetry Prize, which will provide a total of $10,000 in scholarship and prize money, is currently open from now until May 1 for all poets currently enrolled in grades 9-12 self-identifying as Black, Indigenous, or people-of-color. College-bound students in 12th grade can apply for a scholarship award, while students in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade are invited to submit to a separate poetry contest. Prize winners will be announced by July 1, 2022.

For more information and to view the application, please visit our website at www.beyondbaroque.org/AmandaGormanPrize.html

I am ugly. There's a mathematical equation to prove it.

At only eight months old, identical twin sisters Ariel and Zan were diagnosed with Crouzon syndrome — a rare condition where the bones in the head fuse prematurely. They were the first twins known to survive it.

Growing up in Alamo, Ariel and her sister endured numerous appearance-altering procedures. Surgeons would break the bones in their heads and faces to make room for their growing organs. While the physical aspect of their condition was painful, it was nothing compared to the emotional toll of navigating life with a facial disfigurement.

Ariel explores beauty and identity in her Schneider Family Book Award for "excellence of portrayal of the disability experience in literature for youth" honor memoir about resilience, sisterhood, and the strength it takes to put your life, and yourself, back together time and time again.

About the Crockett Library

Time travel to a library of the past with all the conveniences of today. The Crockett library is nestled in the picturesque town of Crockett on the southern side of the Carquinez Strait. The historic building built in 1914, is a quaint, cozy, brown-shingled structure with a view of the Carquinez Bridge, trains, and the C&H Sugar factory. The library houses all collections: Adult, Young Adult, and Children in all formats, including DVDs and audiobooks. Ongoing programs include all-ages story time and a writing club. The Crockett library also has an active Friends of the Library group who fundraise and present many programs of interest throughout the year.
