Happy Earth Day from The Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center! Come spend the day surrounded by nature exploring our trails. Kids can enjoy the day spending time at Nature's Playground, exploring our newly decorated Gnome Trail and discovering more about marshes by reading this year's book set up on our storybook trail, “At the Marsh in the Meadow”.

If you are interested in giving back this Earth Day, join us this Saturday April 25th for an Earth Day clean up. Give back to the Earth by taking care of a place we all love and enjoy. Volunteer to clear trails, tend to gardens, pull invasive plants and get the Center ready for spring. Celebrate the return of spring with fellow volunteers over lunch provided for all who preregister. Preregistration required at 518) 658-2055 or [email protected] at least 24 hours in advance.

Skunk Cabbages are a perennial wildflower found in damp, swampy woodlands. These flowers are thermogenic, meaning they can generate their own heat. This allows them to be one of the first plants to bloom, often when snow is still on the ground. When broken or disturbed this plant emits a foul smelling order, similar to that of skunk or carrion designed to attract pollinators like flies and bees.

Keep your eye out for skunk cabbages and other early signs of spring!
