VEHICLE INSPECTION

NOTE: As of January 1, 2025, non-commercial vehicles are no longer required to obtain a ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜† ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป prior to vehicle registration.

Non-Commercial vehicles registered in one of the following 17 counties are not required to obtain a passing safety inspection, but ๐—บ๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—น๐—น ๐—ผ๐—ฏ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ฎ ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป: Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Ellis, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Johnson, Kaufman, Montgomery, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis, Williamson.

Inspection requirements for commercial vehicles have not changed. All commercial vehicles must continue to obtain a passing commercial inspection regardless of county of residence.

For residents of the above listed emissions counties with registration due to be renewed in June 2025 a passing vehicle emissions inspection must be obtained on or after April 2, 2025.

HOW TO RENEW YOUR REGISTRATION

Registration may be renewed online, using the Texas by Texas website or mobile app for iOS and Android devices, by mail, and in person. Complete information about registration renewal is available at https://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/register-your-vehicle

๐Ÿ’ป Online: Renew online at https://renew.txdmv.gov/ or www.Texas.gov. As of January 1, 2022, online renewal is available up to twelve months past your registration expiration date. Please allow adequate time for processing and mail delivery, often approximately ten business days.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Texas by Texas (TxT) mobile application, available in the App Store and Google Play store. Texas by Texas is available to everyone on the TxT website at https://txt.texas.gov

Annual vehicle registration renewal is available through the TxT mobile application. You may also renew your vehicle registration electronically using Texas by Texas: You donโ€™t have to download the mobile app to use TxT. You can create an account, sign in to an existing account, and complete transactions on the web or mobile app.

๐Ÿ“ฉ By Mail: Return the bottom portion of your registration renewal form, payment and other required information to your county tax assessor-collector. Motorists choosing to renew by mail need to allow adequate time for mail delivery and processing, which varies by county.

๐Ÿช In certain counties, registration renewal services may be available in additional locations, such as grocery stores, AAA offices, or title companies. Please contact your local county tax office for more information about this option.

๐Ÿ”Œ๐Ÿš˜ IMPORTANT NOTE FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLE OWNERS

The cost of registering fully electric vehicles in Texas increased September 1, 2023. Senate Bill 505, passed by the Texas Legislature during the 88th Regular Session, adds a $200 annual fee for electric vehicle registration. The new fee is in addition to standard vehicle registration fees and any tax otherwise due for the vehicle and does not apply to hybrid vehicles that use a combination of gasoline and electric.

โœ”๏ธ Residents of Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Ellis, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Johnson, Kaufman, Montgomery, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis, and Williamson counties must obtain a passing vehicle emissions inspection prior to registration renewal. The inspection must be obtained within 90 days before the last day of the month in which your registration expires.
