During the Flanders Fire evacuation, many residents and campers were forced to leave their property behind as they evacuated the area for their safety. Unfortunately, someone took advantage of the situation involving a red 1982 Honda 185S three-wheeler that had been left behind by campers during the evacuation.

The three-wheeler was reportedly stripped down around May 17th, and then the remaining complete three-wheeler was taken from the area around May 18th. The incident occurred south of County Road 11 and east of E. Horseshoe Lake Road.

We are asking anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area, has information about the theft, or knows the whereabouts of the three-wheeler to contact the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office.

It is disappointing that during a time when our community came together to support one another during a major emergency, someone chose to take advantage of the situation for personal gain.

If you have any information, please contact the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office at 218-829-4749.

WILDFIRE UPDATES

5/18 Update:

9:00 AM - Crews will continue working the Flanders Fire throughout today, focusing on hot spots and strengthening containment lines. While the area did receive some rain, it was not significant enough to have much impact on the fire conditions.

County Road 11 remains closed at this time. Crow Wing County will notify the public as soon as the roadway is reopened, which could possibly occur at some point later today.

Once the road does reopen, fire crews and emergency personnel will still be actively working in the area. We ask the public to please avoid interfering with crews so they can continue operating safely and effectively. Our priority remains protecting lives, property, and the safety of everyone in the area.

We are also asking that individuals who do not have a reason to be in the area, including those who may simply be curious, please refrain from traveling into the fire area until crews have completed their work. Keeping unnecessary traffic out of the area helps ensure the safety of both the public and emergency responders.

Again, we are overwhelmed by the incredible support from this community. The kindness, donations, encouragement, and willingness to help have meant so much to the responders and families impacted by this fire. Thank you.

Today at 12:31 p.m., a 911 call was received from a 19 year old male stating that the paddle boat he was on had capsized on Little Emily Lake. The caller reported that he and two adult females were in the water when the call was unexpectedly disconnected.
Responders arrived on scene and located the two adult females, ages 20 and 22 who reported that the male had not returned to shore. One of the females was transported by ambulance for injuries related to cold exposure.
Crow Wing County Boat and Water personnel, along with Dive Team members, initiated search operations. At approximately 2:54 p.m., responders located and recovered the male in roughly 23 feet of water.
The individuals involved were college students visiting the area. Several lake residents also assisted with rescue efforts, and the Sheriff’s Office extends its appreciation for their timely and helpful response. Please keep the families of all involved in your prayers as they go through this very difficult traumatic time.

Heads up, drivers: Minnesota law on stopping for school buses has changed. You must now stop at least 20 feet from the bus whenever the red lights are flashing. The stop arm does not have to be extended. This update closes a loophole where drivers previously may have tried to “beat the arm” when passing a bus — a risky move that puts children in danger.

Slowing down and adding that extra caution will help make sure every child can travel to and from school safely.

Hear that call? The ding of a text message? A notification from your favorite social media app? If you respond while driving, you put yourself and everyone else on the road at risk. That call could cost you more than a ticket, so park the phone and focus on the road.
