TYLER MOUNTAIN FIRE DEPARTMENT
STRUCTURE FIRE – BIG TYLER RD

Yesterday evening at approximately 7:56 PM, units responded to a residential structure fire in the 4800 block of Big Tyler Road in the lower end of our district in Tyler Mountain.

Crews operated on scene for several hours due to multiple additions to the structure, which made extinguishment more complex. With no hydrants in the immediate area, Tanker 236 was utilized for water supply operations. Big Tyler Rd was shut down for several hours during this time.

We would like to thank the Dunbar Fire Department, Nitro Fire Department, and Institute Fire Department for their assistance.

Happy Easter! We hope everyone has a safe day!

A Piece of Tyler Mountain Fire Department History

This letter, sent to our community in 1965, is a glimpse into the early days of the Tyler Mountain Fire Department. At that time, the department was located across from Point Harmony Elementary—where the old “Mr. G’s” building now stands—and our first-out pumper was a 1949 Chevy. There wasn’t even a 9-1-1 system yet in Kanawha County, and selective members and their families received the emergency call from their home land-line!

We have come a long way since then. The growth, progress, and capabilities we have today are a direct result of the dedication and hard work of those who came before us. Their commitment built the foundation of the department we proudly serve in today.

Most importantly, we remain incredibly grateful for our community. Your continued support through annual fire dues is what allows us to operate, respond, and protect the citizens of Tyler Mountain and Cross Lanes. Without your support, none of this would be possible.

We encourage everyone to take a moment to read this letter, as it is truly unique and a meaningful piece of our history.

Be on the lookout in the coming days for our 2026 Annual Dues post, highlighting why your support remains just as important today as it was then.

Mutual aid plays a critical role whenever there is a fire in our district. When the public sees multiple departments responding, it is because those additional resources are needed to ensure the incident is handled safely, effectively, and as quickly as possible. Low staffing is an issue facing both paid and volunteer fire departments across the country, and having adequate manpower and equipment available helps ensure our community receives the level of service it deserves.

In addition, the Tyler Mountain Fire Department follows a closest-unit response model, utilizing the nearest available departments, whether paid or volunteer. We believe this standard helps provide the quickest possible assistance to both our community and our firefighters. Our district covers more than 25 square miles and includes a wide variety of terrain, neighborhoods, and roadways. Because of this, the district is also divided into response zones so that the most appropriate departments can be dispatched to different areas, again ensuring the fastest possible response.

Any reported structure fire within our district automatically receives four fire stations on the initial dispatch. Volunteer departments are exactly that—volunteer. Our firefighters have full-time jobs and other responsibilities, which means staffing can vary depending on the time of day. By dispatching our department along with three additional stations on all building fires, we help ensure that the community receives prompt assistance and that our firefighters have the support they need to operate safely.

Current mutual aid assignments in our fire district (including all side streets and neighborhoods off the listed roadways):

New Goff Mountain Road, Goff Mountain Road, Cross Lanes Drive, and Big Tyler Road

Washington Street West and Big Tyler Road past Rocky Fork
• Tyler Mountain

We appreciate the assistance from these departments very much and take great pride in the working relationships that have developed over the years. This is all done in the best interest of our community and that is our #1 priority!

⚠️❗️Public Notice

A vacant residence on Big Tyler Road near Alpine Drive, which experienced a fire last night, has reignited this evening. Due to multiple areas of structural collapse, crews are unable to safely access portions of the building to fully extinguish the fire.
