Cross Plains Police Department

Cross Plains Police Department Hello Friends! Welcome to the Cross Plains Police Department's (CPPD) page. Non-emergency calls should be made to 608-798-4100 and follow the prompts.

The Mission of the Cross Plains Police Department is to advance the highest levels of public safety, trust, and professionalism by strengthening community partnerships through fair and impartial policing while fostering employee wellness and growth. It is our intention to provide you an online community police presence with our department and aid in community outreach and education. Please do not

use our page to report a crime or to request an officer. In the case of an emergency, call 9-1-1. Cross Plains Police Department is made up of a Chief, Lieutenant/Detective, four Patrol Officers, and an Administrative Assistant. We try to maintain round the clock staffing, 24/7. Due to training, illness, training, vacation, and days off (yes, even our officers need time away from the job); there may be periods of time where an officer is not readily available. Messages can be left for officers. To accomplish the Mission of the Cross Plains Police Department we hold these core values at the HEART of our service. Honor: We believe in serving our community with honesty, fairness, and integrity, while holding ourselves accountable always. Excellence: We believe in personal and professional excellence, dedication to duty, and humble service to others. Adaptability: We believe in being flexible, not only to the changing social climate and evolving technologies but to individual situations as they unfold. Respect: We believe in seeing the best in people and focusing on their abilities, qualities, and strengths, while having due regard for their feelings, wishes, rights, and traditions. Teamwork: We believe in cooperation, collaboration, and unity among ourselves, members of the community, and all village departments to achieve common goals. Disclaimer

🚲🛴 COMMUNITY UPDATE: E-BIKES & E-SCOOTERS NOW COVERED BY VILLAGE ORDINANCE

The Village Board has unanimously adopted an update to the Village’s bicycle ordinance addressing the use of electric bicycles (e-bikes) and electric scooters (e-scooters) in our community.

The updated ordinance took effect August 24, 2026.

📖 READ THE FULL VILLAGE ORDINANCE:
https://www.cross-plains.wi.us/DocumentCenter/View/2728/2026-05-Repeal-and-Recreate-Section-5114-Concerning-Bicycles?bidId=

🚲 What does this mean?

The Village ordinance now specifically addresses e-bikes and e-scooters, providing local regulations for these increasingly popular forms of transportation.

Residents should also be aware that Wisconsin state law applies in addition to Village regulations. Riders are responsible for complying with all applicable state traffic, equipment and operating requirements.

⚖️ Wisconsin State Law

Wisconsin law addresses electric bicycles and electric scooters through several statutes, including Wis. Stat. §§ 340.01, 346.805, 346.806 and 347.489.

Wisconsin Stat. § 340.01 defines an electric bicycle and establishes the framework for Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3 e-bikes.

Wisconsin Stat. § 346.805 addresses the operation of electric scooters and electric personal assistive mobility devices, including their operation around pedestrians.

Wisconsin Stat. § 346.806 addresses the operation of electric bicycles on bikeways.

⚠️ What about E-Motos?

E-motos were NOT added to the Village's bicycle ordinance.

However, e-motos may still be regulated under Wisconsin state law, depending on the particular vehicle and its specifications. An e-moto may meet the state's definition of a motorcycle, moped or another type of motor vehicle, which can trigger separate requirements for registration, licensing, equipment and operation.

Therefore, the fact that e-motos are not specifically included in the Village bicycle ordinance does not mean they are exempt from Wisconsin law.

The bottom line

✅ Bicycles — covered by Village and state regulations
✅ E-bikes — addressed by the updated Village ordinance and Wisconsin state law
✅ E-scooters — addressed by the updated Village ordinance and Wisconsin state law
⚠️ E-motos — not included in the Village bicycle ordinance, but subject to Wisconsin's motor vehicle, motorcycle or moped laws

We encourage everyone who uses a bicycle, e-bike, e-scooter or e-moto to know the rules, ride responsibly, respect pedestrians, and share our roads and pathways safely.

Thank you to the Village Board for unanimously adopting this update and to our community for helping keep our streets, sidewalks and pathways safe. 🚲🛴

🚲 A Friendly Reminder from Chief Tony

With more e-bikes and e-scooters out on our roads and paths, I wanted to share a quick reminder about the rules in Wisconsin and right here in Cross Plains.

Wisconsin law recognizes three classes of e-bikes:

• Class 1: Pedal-assist up to 20 mph
• Class 2: Motor-assisted, with assistance up to 20 mph
• Class 3: Pedal-assist up to 28 mph

E-bikes have fully operable pedals and an electric motor of 750 watts or less. Wisconsin law prohibits anyone under 16 from operating a Class 3 e-bike.

Our Cross Plains Ordinance §51.14 adds some additional requirements, including:

• Class 3 e-bikes are not permitted on Village sidewalks, shared-use paths, park paths, conservation trails or conservation areas.
• Class 1 & 2 e-bikes and e-scooters are limited to 15 mph in those areas.
• Yield to pedestrians and obey stop signs and traffic laws.
• No racing or trick riding.
• Use proper lights and reflectors after dark.
• Anyone under 18 riding an e-bike or e-scooter must wear a properly fitted helmet.

Our goal isn’t to discourage anyone from enjoying these great ways to get around—it’s simply to help everyone understand the rules and share our roads and paths safely.

If you need a helmet please contact us we may be able to help.

If you have any additional questions please contact us.

Thanks for looking out for one another, and as always, ride safe!

Attention, Master Builders of Cross Plains...

We have to admit...the creativity is impressive. Somewhere between a tree clubhouse, a wilderness survival show, and an HGTV "off-the-grid" special, someone has been busy building a clubhouse on Village property (4011 St. Francis Street).

Unfortunately, while imagination earns bonus points, cutting, moving, or using Village property to build your secret headquarters doesn't.

So here's your opportunity to be the heroes of your own story.

If you (or someone you know) helped build this woodland masterpiece, you have 10 days to:
✅ Remove all of the clubhouse materials.
✅ Restore the area to its original condition.
✅ Save everyone the extra paperwork.

No hard feelings we'd much rather see this quietly disappear than spend time figuring out who belongs to the "Clubhouse Builders Club."

If the clubhouse remains after 10 days, we'll begin looking a little harder for the construction crew and determine what enforcement action may be appropriate.

Help us keep our parks beautiful so everyone can enjoy them.

Thanks, everyone!

That was quick, owner found!!

Found iPad!!

Is your iPad taking an unscheduled vacation?

We have a found iPad that’s patiently waiting at the Police Department to be reunited with its owner. It’s been very cooperative, but unfortunately it hasn’t been able to tell us who it belongs to.

If you think it’s yours, please contact us and be prepared to describe the iPad (case, wallpaper, serial number, or other identifying details) so we can make sure it goes home with the right person.

Help us solve this mystery and reunite this lonely tablet with its owner!
