Do you know what Mom, Grandma, Auntie, or the other influential nurturing people in your life would love for Mother's Day? A photo of you, in nature, with a trout named Billy B. I know it's what *I* would love for Mother's Day. (hint hint) Or better yet, grab that important person, pose with them, and have a photo memory to treasure.

The 3rd Annual Arbor Day Tree Hunt is still going on through May 9! We've had some great photos and always enjoy adding to our collection.

Humans love a good search. Hide and Seek. Where's Waldo? Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? Where is the Rec Coordinator?

What?! You haven't heard of the game "Where Is the Rec Coordinator?" To be fair, it's new AND everyone attending Trout Days has a chance to play. The rules are easy:
1) Find the Rec Coordinator.
2) Introduce yourself. Get a trinket.
3) If you have a picture you took as part of the Arbor Day Tree Hunt, show her and you'll get a special prize.

But you don't even know who the Rec Coordinator is - how will you know you've found her?

Don't worry. You'll know. Just keep your eyes open.

We want as many people as possible to enjoy public events for as long as they would like to. With this in mind, Cross Plains Rec and the Lions Club are co-hosting a sensory tent during Trout Days. It will be located along the Mill Creek Parkway near the craft and civic organization fair.

What is a sensory tent? Some people feel overwhelmed by crowds, noises, scents, and other sensory input. This overwhelming feeling may cause someone to feel:
- incredibly anxious
- physically ill
- like crying or screaming
- shut down and unable to easily interact with the environment

The sensory tent is a quieter, dimmer space for someone to get away from the crowd. Toys, pillows, or blankets can help people regulate their system so they feel better able to rejoin the event or get through the crowd to go home.

Who can use the space? Anyone. You do NOT need a diagnosis, disability, or condition to use the space. If you would feel better after some time away from all of the activity, you are welcome to use the space.

If you are interested in volunteering for an hour or so to answer questions and help keep the space ready for anyone who needs it, contact Jill, the Rec Coordinator at [email protected]

[Alt Text for Screen Readers: A flyer with the Cross Plains Parks and Rec and the Lions Club logos at the top reads -

A sensory tent is a public space designed to give people who need a quieter, less stimulating space away from crowds and noise to go to help them decompress and get more regulated. We hope this space allows families and individuals to stay longer at this event.

This is shared space, so we ask:
Anyone ill or injured should go to the EMS tent.

Use the ADA accessible porta potties to change diapers or clothing. There are also public bathrooms located in some of the businesses along Mill Creek Parkway.

We have sensory toys here as tool to help people regulate. It is not intended as a play space.

Anyone requiring a caregiver to safely participate in today’s event also needs a caregiver present with them in this space.

Children under the age of 10 must have a responsible caregiver with them while in this space.

Leave this area the same or better than you found it.

Everyone has different ways to regulate their system - your way may look different from someone else’s. This is a safe space for all and we expect people here to be respected and respectful.

We need your help!

We need at least 3 volunteers to help the 5K and 1 Mile Run/Walk run smoothly.

1) A volunteer at Ludden and Bourbon near the Latitudes parking lot. This person will help 5K participants cross Ludden as well as remind the 1 Milers they are at the turn around point. 8:15am - 10:00am. You will also have a basic first aid kit with you.

2) A volunteer at Rocky Bluff and Hwy KP to direct 5K participants to the left turn. 9am - 10:15am. You will also have a basic first aid kit with you.

3) A volunteer at Glacial Valley Park to help Village staff with sign in/registration. You'll help people who didn't pick up on Friday to get their packet, direct same day participants to the QR code to use to register, and answer general questions. 7:30am - 9:00am

If you're not a morning person, or you're participating in the race, the Lions Club may still be looking for volunteers. To find out more information about that, or to volunteer for one of the above assignments, email Rec Coordinator Jill at [email protected]

It should come to no surprise that our residents are on top of things. Less than 12 hours after putting up signs, we have the first 2 entries for the Third Annual Arbor Day Tree Hunt! I can't wait to see what photos come in next.

There are 10 trees marked in parks and conservancies around the village. Find one between now and May 9, take a quick photo, and email it to the QR code on the red sign. We have 3 signs accessible from the sidewalk so more people can participate more easily.

All photos will be featured on social media and eligible for our drawing for a gift card to a local business, a Village of Cross Plains blanket, or Village of Cross Plains hat. One photo will be chosen at random, and one by popular vote on Facebook and Instagram. The link to the full contest rules will be in the comments.

[Image description: The first photo features a group of teenage boys doing what teenage boys to best - goof around. One boy says "aahhh", one reads the red sign, one boy looks very astonished, and the last tries not to laugh at his friends' antics. The second photo features a girl and boy with big smiles posing for the camera. The girl holds Billy B the Rainbow Trout.]

We are offering 2 music classes this summer, one for preschoolers called Boomwhackers and Bells, and one for elementary schoolers called Boomwhackers, Bells, and Buckets. (We just added Buckets to the elementary class.) But what are Boomwhackers, Bells, and Buckets?

They are musical instruments anyone who can tap a hollow tube or shake a bell can play.

Boomwhackers are color-coded plastic tubes tuned to play certain pitches.

Bells are just what they sound like - color coded handbells that are tuned to certain pitches.

You don't need to be able to read music to play either instrument - the songs are written out using colors that match the instruments.

The buckets are for bucket drumming using upside down 5 gallon buckets and drum sticks. Songs are comprised of different rhythms and parts of the drum to hit with the drum stick.

Enjoy our impromptu bell concert! The kids had never played these bells before and they caught on really quickly.

If your child loves music and rhythm, Boomwhackers and Bells is the class for them! See the comments for the registration link.
