PRIORITIES. ADDRESSING MENTAL HEALTH

Now more than ever, we need to be diligently keeping our collective eyes and ears open for signs that a child is not in a good place. Anxiety, depression, substance abuse, bullying, etc. are signals that a child needs help.

Faculty and staff need to be thoroughly trained to recognize these signs and take appropriate action. Our schools have our children under their care eight plus hours a day, in loco parentis. Concerns need to be addressed swiftly by trained professionals, getting the students outside help, if needed.

Studies show that many children today are more anxious now than students were at the height of the cold war and more depressed then during the great depression. It is imperative that all our students feel good about themselves.

We can do better....We must do better!

It is the obligation of every public school, and the right of every child to be given a quality education. Given that responsibility, we need to make sure no child is left behind, as well as, challenging our gifted students. No easy task but one that we must always strive to achieve.

At the very core is to make sure every child can read and write at an early age. It is essential for all future learning. We must insure that ever student gets a well-rounded education in Math, English, Social Studies and Science. Every child needs to be educated, and hopefully develop, an understanding and appreciation for the Arts, Foreign Languages and Cultures, Physical Education and Health.

As our students get older, we should give them opportunities to be able to concentrate in area of interest both during school and after school. Conceptually easy, in practice much more complex.

We want every student to feel educationally confident and fulfilled after they have completed their schooling and every parent feeling great about their decision to move their family into our school district.

We can do better....We must do better!

PRIORITIES. ASSURE SAFETY & SECURITY

This doesn’t mean having armed guards at every door. This means making sure all parents feel confident and good about sending their kids to school every morning, and that the children feel safe, secure and welcomed.

Are our facilities as secure and protected as we can practically make them? Are our children being bullied or experiencing discrimination? Anything that gets in the way of each child’s ability to learn, including them feeling safe and protected when they’re at school, needs to be addressed.

Changing culture and creating a sense of community takes time and it needs to be worked on every day by the entire organization.

We can do better....We must do better.

PRIORITIES. FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

As a long time local business owner, I take fiscal responsibility seriously. We need to find creative and “out of the box” ideas to decrease the cost per student in this district (approximately $42,000/student, we are amongst the very highest in Westchester) without affecting the quality of education we deliver. Balancing the needs of the students and the people who are paying for the education can be a tricky one . We can accomplish this by fine-tooth combing the budget, being creative, assuring proper competitive bidding for the best value, etc. I will seek out every avenue to be fiscally responsible. Taxpayers want and deserve transparency and value for their hard-earned money.

We can do better....We must do better!
