Last night, the Tennessee Senate passed Senate Bill 1900 with strong support (27–3) — legislation I was proud to sponsor to strengthen protections for the first responders who serve our communities every day.

This legislation started with Jade Callister, a full-time firefighter and Advanced EMT with Crossville Fire & Rescue, who brought this issue forward after she was assaulted while responding to a call in 2025.

Her willingness to speak up — not just for herself, but for others in her profession — helped turn a personal experience into meaningful action.

Because of Jade, this bill ensures that those who answer the call for help are better protected when they do.

For me, this is what it means to serve — listening when someone brings you a real problem, and working to deliver a real solution.

When a 911 call comes in, first responders don’t hesitate – they rush to the emergency.

I’m proud to sponsor Senate Bill 1900, a bill that strengthens protections for Tennessee’s firefighters and emergency personnel by aligning penalties for assault against them with those already in place for law enforcement officers.

Under this legislation, assaulting a first responder would be a Class E felony, carrying a mandatory minimum $10,000 fine and at least 60 days incarceration. These men and women step into dangerous and unpredictable situations every day. They deserve to know the law stands firmly behind them.

This bill was brought to me by Jade Callister, a full-time firefighter and Advanced EMT with Crossville Fire & Rescue, who was assaulted last year while rendering aid at a private residence. Her experience is a sobering reminder of the risks first responders face in the line of duty.

I’m pleased to share that SB1900 has moved out of the Senate Judiciary Committee and is now headed to the Senate Finance Committee.

Grateful to stand with Jade and all of our first responders who serve with courage and commitment every single day.

🚒 Big things ahead for Crossville Fire! 🚒

Fire Chief Chris South gave us a sneak peek at the future—new Interstate Drive station opening early 2026, a 100’ tower truck, and plans for even more stations to keep our growing community safe. Proud to have the #1-rated fire department in the Upper Cumberland! 🙌🔥
