Let’s put into perspective what it would take to pave every road in Cumberland County.

We currently maintain nearly 1,100 miles of roadway. With paving costs ranging from $160,000 to $200,000 per mile, the total cost to pave every road would be between $176 million and $220 million.

Our primary funding source is the fuel tax, which brings in about $4.5 to $5 million per year and that funding has to cover all road related projects, not just paving.

Even if we dedicated every dollar strictly to paving (which we can’t), it would still take 35 to nearly 50 years to complete every road and by then, many roads would already need repairs again.

That’s why we focus on prioritizing the roads in the worst condition and making the most of the funding we have.

We’re paving the way forward one road at a time, doing everything we can with the resources available. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue improving Cumberland County’s roads.

The Cumberland County Highway Department will reopen Tuesday, April 7th at 8:00 AM at our new location: 23 Northside Lane, in the green building on the corner.

As most of you know, our previous office was a total loss in the recent fire, along with the Election Commission Office and the Facilities Maintenance Department.

While this has been a challenging time, our road crews never missed a beat and continued working hard to serve the county.

We are proud to announce that our office is now back open and ready to serve our community once again. Thank you for your patience and support during this time.
