Our sanctuaries are maintained by a part-time caretaker and by volunteers on trail maintenance days. We are also grateful for the continuing oversight of our sanctuary neighbors to let us know about sanctuary concerns and obs

ervations. Volunteer Trail Walkers also monitor our sanctuaries. Enter a Trail Walker report at our web site here:

All of our sanctuaries are open to visitors free of charge, seven days a week, dawn to dusk. Please contact our office if you want to bring a group to one of our sanctuaries. With advance notice, we may be able to provide your group with a guided tour. Even if your group wishes to visit without a guide, please contact us in advance. For the best possible experience for your group, we want to ensure that your visit does not coincide with another group's visit. Sanctuary History
Laura and Willard Brinton gave the original 112 acres of Brinton Brook Sanctuary to National Audubon to permanently protect their land as a wildlife sanctuary. After Laura's death in 1975, an additional 17 acres were added to the sanctuary by the Brintons’ niece, Ruth Brinton Perera. Saw Mill River Audubon managed Brinton Brook Sanctuary for National Audubon from 1958 to 1991, when full ownership of the original sanctuary lands was transferred to our organization. In 1995 Saw Mill River Audubon added the Coyote Trail to link Village trails through a 27-acre parcel in the northeast corner. This parcel is owned by the Village of Croton-on-Hudson and managed by Saw Mill River Audubon as part of Brinton Brook Sanctuary. Current Projects
We have been gradually restoring native species to the small meadow and along the Brinton Brook watershed. New and replacement nest boxes for eastern bluebirds and other cavity nesters have been added to the meadow and along the powerlines and are being monitored. Let us know if you have suggestions for other habitat or trail work.

How soon can you find the stripey snake? A handsome Garter Snake seen this morning at Brinton Brook Sanctuary. Four pics getting closer with each. (This is a non-venomous snake and a welcome predator for a healthy habitat. So…if your paths cross, just say hi and let them live in peace, please.)

January through March is coyote mating season in New York State. During this time of year, coyotes tend to be more active, meaning that there is an increased likelihood of seeing coyotes in our area. Please read the following guidance regarding human / coyote contact from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. Additional info on reducing conflicts with coyotes can be found here: https://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/6971.html
